This four year part-time BSc degree is ideal if you want to reinforce or further a career in safety and environmental management.

It incorporates both the NEBOSH Level 6 National Diploma for Occupational Health and Safety Management Professionals and the NEBOSH National Diploma in Environmental Management.

You enrol on the full BSc programme but you can leave at the appropriate point if you just want one or both of the NEBOSH diplomas. Or you can continue and study for the full BSc qualification, on top of your NEBOSH diplomas.

About this course

Launch or further your career with a part-time BSc programme which earns you up to three globally recognised qualifications on the same part-time course.

Students are expected to study for around 20 hours per week – so it can be combined with other commitments – and you have the flexibility to take control of your future by choosing which aspects of the programme you wish to complete.

Whatever you decide, you’ll be securing a university degree-level qualification and will develop the skills to help your organisation make informed decisions and manage risk on a range of environmental and occupational health and safety matters.

Students on the course have come from a range of well-known organisations including The Health and Safety Executive, The Environment Agency, Siemens, BP, INEOS, Humberside Fire and Rescue Service and Police Service, Conoco Phillips (P66), Associated British Ports (ABP), and NEBOSH.

Scheduled study hours and how you’re assessed

Throughout your degree, you’re expected to study approximately 600 hours per year. This includes scheduled hours and independent study. Also, as a vocational course your experience working in your profession contributes towards your studies. How this time’s divided among each of these varies each year and depends on the course and modules you study.

Managing Health and Safety

This module develops your understanding of the principles of managing health and safety in the workplace and the legislative framework and judicial system in the UK as it applies to health and safety.  This module is also Unit DN1, ‘Know – workplace health and safety principles (UK)’ of the NEBOSH National Diploma  for Occupational Health and Safety Management Professionals.

Workplace and Work Equipment

This module develops your understanding of the principles of the range of physical hazards encountered within workplaces and through the use of work equipment and the potential effects of exposure to those physical hazards.  This module is also Unit DN3, ‘Do – controlling workplace safety issues (UK)’ of the NEBOSH National Diploma for Occupational Health and Safety Management Professionals.

Hazardous Agents in the Workplace

This module develops understanding of the principles of the range of hazardous agents encountered in the workplace and the potential effects of exposure of exposure to those agents. This module is also Unit DN2, ‘Do – controlling workplace health issues (UK)’ of the NEBOSH National Diploma for Occupational Health and Safety Management Professionals.

Management of Environmental Risk

This module follows the NEBOSH Environmental Diploma syllabus. Topics covered include principles of environmental risk management, control strategies for environmental risk and the range of environmental audit systems.

Legal and Organisational Factors

This module follows the NEBOSH Environmental Diploma syllabus. Topics covered include the environmental legislative framework, enforcement of environmental law, and civil liability.

Control Measures for Environmental Risk

This module follows the NEBOSH Environmental Diploma syllabus. Topics covered include solid and liquid wastes, gaseous and particulate releases to atmosphere, water pollution, noise, nuisance and classification and protection of the countryside.

This module follows the NEBOSH Environmental Diploma syllabus. Topics covered include environmental management systems, producer responsibility and renewable energy.

Health, Safety and Environmental Management Workplace Based Project

This module allows you to draw upon knowledge and understanding gained on years 1-3 of the course in order to assess a chosen subject area in your workplace and produce a written report suitable for presentation to senior management.

Environmental Management II

This module focuses on means of managing environmental sustainability in organisations. Topics covered include sustainable development in relation to energy, construction, transport, materials, and water and waste management.

Disaster and Emergency Management

Develop an understanding of the potential impact of a disaster on an organisation, as well as the methods of managing disasters and emergencies. You'll study historical development; definitions and institutions; law, guidance and sources of information; major incident investigation and public inquiries; and management of disasters and emergencies.

Law and Professional Ethics

This module gives insights into law and professional ethics as they apply to health and safety managers. Topics include possible application and effects of potential and developing legislation and the impact as a result of Brexit. Role and function of mediation, expert witnesses and coroners. Role, responsibilities and liability of consultants, and need for and function of liability insurance. Law relating to contractual obligations. Possible conflicts with professional ethics.

Health and Safety Management

This module gives insights into the range of health and safety management systems and means by which organisations’ can monitor and analyse their performance to them. Topics include safety management systems, performance monitoring techniques, cost-benefit analysis, SMARTT, and loss control techniques, integrating safety, environmental and quality systems. Organisational learning and effects on work performance. Human resources issues and cultural factors and their effect on health and safety strategies. Monitoring and liaising with contracted personnel and groups.

Workplaces and Workplace Equipment in High Risk Industries

This modules gives insights into advanced issues related to workplaces and work equipment safety. Topics include maintenance – including reliability centred maintenance, total productive maintenance and asset management. Control in high risk industries – to include PES2 and reliability of instrumentation. Human Reliability Assessment. Terotechnology and Life Cycle Costing. Liaising with architects and designers, assessing competence.

Occupational Health and Hygiene

This modules gives insights into advanced issues related to occupational health and hygiene. Topics include occupational health and hygiene control programmes. Emerging issues in occupational health including air quality and respiratory health, nanoparticles and nanotechnology, endocrine disruptors, occupational carcinogens and mutagens, magnetic fields, hyperbaric and hypobaric issues and equality issues

Fees are paid at the start of each year of these courses and the fees stated above are for the first year only. Fees can change from year to year so the fee for the second year may be higher than that for the first year.

Some values include NEBOSH exam fees, and these may change before the course starts.

This programme equips you with the knowledge and skills to provide professional advice, lead and promote health, safety and environmental performance in an organisation and workplace.

The programme also leads to a professional qualification and graduate membership of the recognised professional body in the field, the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH) and also provides opportunity to achieve chartered membership of IOSH.
