The Cost of Living Bursary is for students starting at the University of Hull in September 2027, who come from groups that are under-represented in higher education and more likely to face financial pressure while studying. If you’re eligible, you’ll receive £500 or £750 for each eligible year of your course, depending on which award you qualify for.
We believe who you are or where you’re from shouldn’t decide how far you can go. To empower everyone to achieve in their own way, this bursary is designed to ease the pressure and help you focus on your studies. You can spend it on what you need – whether that’s food, rent, books, bills or travel – so you can focus on making the most of your time at university.
The bursary is open to new students starting in September 2027, whether you begin with a foundation year, start in the first year of your course, or join us directly in a later year.
In most cases, no. We’ll check your eligibility automatically using the information in your application and your fee status assessment. You only need to act if we ask you for evidence, or if your circumstances aren’t shown in your application – see the Gypsy, Traveller, Roma, Showmen and Boater and Free School Meals sections below. Every student who meets the criteria will receive the bursary – there’s no limit on the number of awards.
We confirm awards four weeks after the last enrolment date each year, and pay the bursary in one annual instalment into your UK bank account. This is typically around late November. You must be enrolled on your course on that date, and give us your bank details by then. You’ll find payment dates on the Student Portal, once you have enrolled.
