ZOOLOGY

What A levels do you need for a Zoology degree?

To study Zoology at most UK universities (including the University of Hull), you’ll usually need A level Biology. Plus, at least one other science or related subject. Typical entry requirements are around 112 - 120 UCAS points (the equivalent of BBC - BBB at A level). But this varies slightly depending on the university and course structure.

A strong foundation in Biology is essential because it underpins all areas of animal science – from anatomy and physiology to ecology and evolution.

Typical A Level requirements for Zoology

While each university sets its own criteria, most Zoology courses ask for the following combination:

  • A level Biology – required

This is the core subject for all Zoology degrees.

  • A second science or related subject – recommended

Examples include Chemistry, Environmental Science, Psychology, Maths, or Geography.

  • A third subject of your choice

Universities value variety, so a balance between science and communication-focused subjects can strengthen your application.

What do universities look for in a Zoology student?

Admissions tutors look for students who:

  • Have a genuine interest in animal biology, ecology, or environmental science
  • Can handle scientific research and data analysis
  • Show commitment through practical experience - such as volunteering with wildlife groups, animal care organisations, or conservation projects

Your personal statement is a key opportunity to show this enthusiasm and link your studies to your career interests.

University of Hull entry requirements for Zoology

At the University of Hull, the entry requirements for BSc Zoology are:

  • A level Biology – required
  • Three A levels – totalling 112 UCAS points

No science A levels? There’s another route

If you don’t meet the typical A level requirements, many universities (including Hull) offer foundation year programmes in science or biology.

A Science Foundation Year can:

  • Prepare you for a full Zoology degree
  • Cover essential topics in Biology and Chemistry
  • Build your confidence with university-level study and lab work

This is a great option if you:

  • Didn’t take Biology or other sciences at A level
  • Are returning to education after a break
  • Want a more gradual transition into higher education
