PSYCHOLOGY

What A levels do you need for a psychology degree?

To study psychology at most UK universities (including Hull), you’ll usually need A level psychology or another science/related subject, alongside at least one other complementary subject. Typical entry requirements are around 112 – 120 UCAS points (equivalent to BBC – BBB at A level), though this can vary slightly depending on the university and course structure.

A strong foundation in science or mathematics is useful because it underpins research methods and statistics covered in a psychology degree.

Typical A level requirements for psychology

While each university sets its own criteria, most psychology courses ask for the following combination:

  • A level psychology - recommended

While not always required, studying psychology at A level shows your interest and helps prepare you for university-level concepts.

  • A second science or quantitative subject - recommended

Examples include biology, chemistry, mathematics, or physics. These subjects help with understanding research methods and scientific reasoning.

  • A third subject of your choice

Universities value a balance of analytical and communication-focused subjects. English, sociology, or a language can strengthen your application.

What do universities look for?

Admissions tutors typically seek students who:

  • Have a genuine interest in human behaviour, mental processes, and wellbeing
  • Can handle scientific research and data analysis
  • Show commitment through relevant experience, such as volunteering in mental health, social care, or youth work

Your personal statement is an opportunity to highlight your enthusiasm, relevant experience, and how your A levels have prepared you for university-level psychology.

No psychology or science A levels? Consider a foundation year

If you don’t meet the typical A level requirements, Hull offers a science foundation year which can:

  • Prepare you for a full psychology degree
  • Cover essential topics in biology, psychology, and statistics
  • Build confidence with university-level study and independent research

This is ideal if you:

  • Didn’t take psychology or a science at A level
  • Are returning to education after a break
  • Want a gradual introduction to higher education study
