Typical A level requirements for psychology
While each university sets its own criteria, most psychology courses ask for the following combination:
- A level psychology - recommended
While not always required, studying psychology at A level shows your interest and helps prepare you for university-level concepts.
- A second science or quantitative subject - recommended
Examples include biology, chemistry, mathematics, or physics. These subjects help with understanding research methods and scientific reasoning.
- A third subject of your choice
Universities value a balance of analytical and communication-focused subjects. English, sociology, or a language can strengthen your application.
What do universities look for?
Admissions tutors typically seek students who:
- Have a genuine interest in human behaviour, mental processes, and wellbeing
- Can handle scientific research and data analysis
- Show commitment through relevant experience, such as volunteering in mental health, social care, or youth work
Your personal statement is an opportunity to highlight your enthusiasm, relevant experience, and how your A levels have prepared you for university-level psychology.
