POLITICS

Can you get into politics without a degree?

It’s possible to work in politics without a university degree. Particularly through grassroots involvement, campaigning, or community leadership. But a Politics degree - like the one we offer at the University of Hull - gives you more.

You'll gain a strong foundation in theory, policy, and professional skills. Why is this important to have? Because it opens doors to higher-level positions in government, research, and public affairs.

Advantages of studying Politics at university

Practical experience is valuable. But university study also gives you the versatility to turn political interest into a lasting career. Key benefits include:

  • In-depth knowledge Understanding political theory, public policy, and international relations gives you a solid foundation for decision-making and leadership.
  • Transferable skills You’ll gain experience in research, communication, negotiation, and critical analysis - abilities that are essential across government, media, and consultancy roles.
  • Professional networks At Hull, students benefit from connections with MPs, civil servants, and local government representatives, as well as guest lectures and placement opportunities.
  • Career progression Employers in government and public policy often value formal qualifications, which can open doors to graduate schemes or specialist advisory positions that would be hard to access without a degree.

Balancing experience and education

Why choose between experience and education? Have both.

The most successful political careers combine academic understanding with hands-on experience. Alongside developing theoretical knowledge and critical thinking, you’ll gain real-world exposure through placements, internships, or volunteering. That way, you can apply what you’ve learned to real political and policy challenges. Universities play a key role in providing these opportunities, helping students build confidence, networks, and practical skills before they graduate.

Real-world experience at Hull

At Hull, Politics students have exceptional opportunities to apply their learning beyond the classroom. Alongside lectures and seminars, you can gain hands-on experience through community projects, local government work, or internships with MPs and public sector organisations.

All our three-year Politics courses also offer the option to study abroad for a trimester. You can choose from destinations across Europe, the USA, and Hong Kong. And you'll come back with an international perspective on political systems and cultures.

Our renowned Westminster placement scheme, running for over 35 years, is one of the most extensive of its kind in the UK. You’ll spend a trimester working alongside an MP or peer in Parliament, gaining first-hand insight into national policymaking and parliamentary life. Thanks to our strong links with a wide network of MPs, we can often match students with politicians whose work aligns with their own political interests.
