About this course
From your very first day, you’ll step into the role of a trainee engineer - learning by doing. Our hands-on, project-based approach means you won’t just study engineering; you’ll experience it. You’ll design, build and test your own prototypes, developing practical skills that mirror the creativity and challenges of real-world engineering.
This two year top-up degree is designed to help you take your career to the next level. Unlike traditional programmes that require separate work placements, you’ll draw on your current professional experience as a foundation for your academic learning. This makes the course especially suited to those already working in engineering or related fields who are ready to progress into senior or specialist roles.

Module options
Each year, you’ll study modules worth a certain number of credits, and you need 120 credits per year. Most modules are 20 credits – so you’ll study six modules each year. Some longer modules, such as a dissertation, are worth more. In these cases, you’ll study fewer modules - but the number of credits will always add up to 120. Some modules are compulsory, some are optional, so you can build a course that’s right for you.

Examine advanced theories and techniques for stress-analysis problems. The advanced theory and application of finite element analysis is also covered with industry-standard commercial software to tackle complex engineering problems.

Understand and apply the principles of project and organisational management, including project planning, scheduling, risk, and quality control and get experience in leadership, motivation, and management of changes within teams and organisations.

Understand and apply advanced computational techniques for problem solving, familiarise yourself with computer aided design (CAD) packages, and take your designs from the virtual domain to the physical, with computer aided manufacturing (CAM).

Mark’s research supports the development of low-carbon energy, industrial and agricultural systems, especially those related to the circular economies in areas such as bioprocessing, bio-based production systems, and environmental biotechnology.

Dr Stavros Michailos
Lecturer in Chemical Engineering
Stavros is a lecturer and chemical engineer with a PhD from the University of Manchester. His expertise includes low-carbon energy systems, techno-economic assessment, CCUS and sustainable fuels, with 40+ publications and PhD supervision experience.
Entry Requirements
What do I need?
An HND or an equivalent Level 5 qualification in Mechanical Engineering or a related field (e.g. Automotive Engineering, Aeronautical Engineering etc.)
We consider experience and qualifications from the UK and worldwide which may not exactly match the combinations above.
But it's not just about the grades - we'll look at your whole application. We want to know what makes you tick, and about your previous experience, so make sure that you complete your personal statement.
Fees & Funding
How much is it?
Tuition fees for 2027 entry have not been confirmed. Please use 2026-27 information as a guide.
For UK students, our standard course fee is £9,790 per year. Keep in mind that some courses are longer - for example, spending your third year abroad will make your degree four years in total.
This programme is offered on a part-time basis, with students completing 80 credits in Year 1 and 40 credits in Year 2. Therefore, you will pay two-thirds of the total tuition fees in the first year and one-third in the second year.
How do I pay for it?
You can take out a tuition fee loan to cover the full cost of your course. Once you’ve successfully applied for this, you don’t need to do anything else – the money is sent straight to us.
You can also take out a maintenance loan of up to £10,544 a year to cover your living costs, depending on your household income.
Remember, you won’t start paying your loans back until you’ve left university and earn more than £25,000 per year.
