About this course

The ability to understand and assess the impact of public policy on industry and society – as well as diverse issues such as digitisation and technological change, the development of market economies, social inequality, and Brexit – is key in business.

Our BA Business Economics course gives you the knowledge to understand these complex issues and make better business decisions, giving you skills that are attractive to a range of employers across both public and private sectors.

We have links with major international businesses so you can further enhance your employability through real industry experience on placement with the likes of PepsiCo and the NHS, or spend a year with the Government Economic Service or the Office for National Statistics.

In your final year, you’ll also have the chance to take an internship (that’s in addition to the extra option of studying abroad or spending a year on placement in industry).

This degree shares a common first year with our BSc Economics programme so you can choose to switch direction in the second year if you develop a particular area of interest.

Together, we can make the world add up

Placement year

Industry placements take place over a full academic year. This extends a standard undergraduate degree from three to four years, with placement taking place in year three. Once you've completed your placement year, you’ll return to complete the final year of your degree at the University of Hull.

A placement year is a great way to gain industry experience, boost your CV, and potentially earn a salary. Placements must last at least 40 weeks and can start any time after June, once second-year assessments are complete. At Hull, we’re connected with global companies like Bosch, BMW, Siemens, and Disney, giving you the chance to apply your skills in real-world settings, explore career options, and return to your final year with valuable experience and confidence.

Module options

Each year, you’ll study modules worth a certain number of credits, and you need 120 credits per year. Most modules are 20 credits – so you’ll study six modules each year. Some longer modules, such as a dissertation, are worth more. In these cases, you’ll study fewer modules - but the number of credits will always add up to 120. Some modules are compulsory, some are optional, so you can build a course that’s right for you.

Economic and Social Inequality in the 21st Century

Can economics create a fairer society? Yes, it's your job to lead it.

Examine the causes and consequences of economic and social inequality, and why it matters for modern economies and societies.

You’ll investigate how wages, technology, institutions and global development shape inequality across countries and over time. You’ll also learn how inequality is measured and examine the role of public policy in addressing it.
