BA (Hons) Professional Policing

Every day is different when you are studying to join the police. But for Fred Gough, one thing has stood out from the start - the people teaching the course.

“The lectures and the lecturers are brilliant. They make it engaging,” he says. “Two of the lecturers that I have currently are ex-police, and they have a whole world of experience to draw upon. It helps my understanding of the topics that they’re going over by linking it to real-world events and the experience that they have.”

Fred’s decision to study at Hull was shaped not just by what happens in the classroom, but by what happens outside of it, especially the chance to gain real-world experience while completing his degree.

Fred’s decision to study at Hull was shaped not just by what happens in the classroom, but by what happens outside of it, especially the chance to gain real-world experience while completing his degree.

“The moment that I knew Hull was right for me was [when we got chance to train with] the Special Constables within Humberside Police, which is a voluntary police role that allows you to get real-world experience that can help with the degree and career in the future.”

The reputation of the local force also gave him confidence that the University of Hull was the right choice.

“Humberside Police are highly rated throughout the UK for their police force with community engagement and to help solve and help victims.”

While those police connections bring valuable insight into the programme, Fred says the support from university staff has been just as important to his experience.

“We’re supported through every step of the process, with engaging lecturers and personal supervisors that you can go to at any time.”

Outside the classroom, Fred has made the most of university life and everything Hull has to offer.

“I feel very at home in Hull with the number of communities and societies and friends that I’ve made.”

As for what’s next, Fred has a clear goal in mind, and a powerful sense of purpose driving him forward.

“I hope that this degree will help advance my career through the police. I hope to go into Humberside Police and advance through the ranks. [I want] to help engage my community and help support victims of crime.”
