Maternity Support Worker Development

The module aims to give maternity support workers the background knowledge and skills to develop in their role. Topics covered include anatomy and physiology of blood pressure, and understanding and recording maternal and neonatal vital signs.

About this course

The module was designed to meet aspects of the Maternity Support Worker Competency, Education and Career Development Framework to meet the needs of local NHS Trusts. The module aims to give Maternity Support Workers background knowledge and skills to develop in their role.

Topics covered include anatomy and physiology of blood pressure, understanding and recording maternal and neonatal vital signs, understanding the conditions screened for as part of the Newborn Blood Spot Sample as well as how to safely perform the screening test. Other public health topics are also covered, along with organisational specific information such as governance and audit.

Entry Requirements

What do I need?

Current employment within a maternity setting is required for the module. Academic requirements are Level 2 Maths, Level 2 English and completion of the Care Certificate. Alternative academic qualifications will be considered.
