About this course
The Pg Dip CBT: Severe Mental Illness programme is designed to develop highly skilled clinicians capable of delivering evidence-based psychological therapies for individuals with complex and enduring mental health difficulties, including psychosis and bipolar disorder. Aligned with national priorities, the course supports the ongoing development of specialist CBT provision within NHS services, with graduates learning to apply their expertise directly in secondary care and complex clinical settings.
This programme combines academic rigour with intensive clinical application, equipping you with the knowledge and practical skills to work effectively with individuals experiencing severe mental health conditions, with its comorbidities.
You’ll study within a well-established department recognised for excellence in psychological training based on most recent evidence-based research, learning from BABCP-accredited clinicians with extensive experience across NHS services. Their close links to clinical practice ensure that teaching remains current, applied, and directly relevant to the challenges of working with severe mental illness. The course is supported by external experts involved in research and clinical practice.
The course is a Level 1 BABCP Accredited course, all BABCP Level 1 accredited courses meet our quality standards for training delivery and trainer qualifications. This means that the course will give the majority of the criteria necessary to apply for full accreditation, though some elements may need to be topped up in clinical practice, this is variable dependent on the breadth of work undertaken in clinical practice throughout the course.

What do I need?
Applicants will require a minimum of degree at 2:2 typically hold a core profession or be able to demonstrate equivalent criteria based on the KSA Knowledge and Skills Framework.
A minimum of six months clinical experience will be required, with access to a framework of clinical support and appropriate cases within clinical practice

How much is it?
Funding is provided by the NHS, this is a mixture of recruit to train pathways where NHS Trust provide temporary employment subject to completion of the course or individuals who are enhancing their clinical practice who retain a substantive role in the NHS.
