About this course
Explore how coasts and estuaries function, how they evolve over time, and why they are increasingly vulnerable to flooding and erosion.
This Level 7 module examines the physical processes that shape coastal environments, including waves, tides, currents and sediment transport. You'll investigate how these processes create and modify coastal landforms, while also exploring the growing challenges posed by storm surges, climate change and sea-level rise.
Learning combines theory with practical application through fieldwork, laboratory activities and GIS-based analysis. You'll gain first-hand experience of investigating coastal environments and examining flood alleviation and coastal defence schemes.
The module develops both analytical and technical skills, equipping you to evaluate coastal risks and understand the management strategies used to protect communities and infrastructure. As part of your studies, you'll use an ArcGIS StoryMap to critically analyse coastal landforms, dominant processes and associated risks.
Whether you're looking to enhance your professional expertise or prepare for further study, this module provides valuable knowledge and practical experience relevant to a range of environmental careers.
