About this award

The University of Hull offers fully funded opportunities through the White Rose Doctoral Training Partnership (WRDTP) for postgraduate researchers in the Social Sciences.

You’ll develop your own research idea addressing some of society’s most pressing challenges, aligned with one of the WRDTP’s seven interdisciplinary themed pathways.

The support provided allows you to focus fully on your research and benefit from the collaborative training and resources of the White Rose network.

Applications are now open for programmes starting September 2027.

Students from eligible social science schools and departments

Hull-specific opportunities

Hull students can apply for all White Rose award types:

Pathway Awards – funding for student-led PhD projects.
Advanced Quantitative Methods (AQM) – for projects using advanced statistical methods.
Advanced Data Analytics (ADA) – for projects using large or complex data.
Stuart Hall Foundation Awards – for Black British students.

Find a supervisor

Once you have a research question and a draft proposal and know which WRDTP Interdisciplinary Pathway your project aligns with, identify a supervisor at the University of Hull from one of the participating disciplines:

Important

Applications without a confirmed supervisor will be rejected.

Applicants must submit their White Rose application alongside their University of Hull application. Applications submitted without both documents will not be considered.

Applicants must also select White Rose as their funding source to ensure their application is routed through the correct admissions stream. Applications that do not indicate this will be rejected.

How to apply

The application deadline is 17:00 on 16 December 2026. Late applications will not be accepted. Faculty approved submissions will then need to complete any amendments to their applications by 17:00 on 20 January 2027. Late applications for both deadlines will not be accepted.

Apply to Hull

Submit a University of Hull application for your chosen subject and upload your completed scholarship application form via the corresponding admissions page (see list of specific subject areas below).

PhD programme selection

Apply for a standard PhD (full-time or part-time). If you are awarded a scholarship, your application will be matched to the appropriate WRDTP route.

Note: Final route allocation is made by the White Rose DTP panel and may differ from your initial choice.

Entry requirements vary by subject and can be found on our course pages:

Only applicants in the stated programmes will be considered.

Applicants who have already commenced a PhD are not eligible to apply for a WRDTP studentship. Remote, online or distance-learning PhD programmes are not eligible for ESRC funding.
