This award provides funding to study the MSc by Research Sport, Health and Exercise Science while investigating how the menstrual cycle affects the performance, wellbeing and experiences of adolescent female footballers.
As participation in women's and girls' football continues to grow, there is increasing recognition of the importance of understanding female athlete health. While research has yet to establish a consistent link between the menstrual cycle and physical performance, many female athletes report that menstrual symptoms can influence their training, competition and overall wellbeing.
This research project will explore how young female footballers perceive the menstrual cycle to affect their performance, injury risk and psychological wellbeing. It will also investigate the barriers to open conversations about menstrual health between players and coaches, including how coach characteristics, such as gender, may influence these discussions.
MSc fee waiver (equivalent to home fees) and additional £5000 scholarship to support with living costs.
Home postgraduate research students
Students studying MSc by Research Sport, Health and Exercise Science, with a BSc in related subject area – 2:1 and above
This scholarship is available for full-time study only. Applicants should have a minimum 2:1 degree in a sport and exercise science or psychology related subject. For more details on our entry requirements please visit the postgraduate admissions webpage.
The successful applicant will receive a fee waiver and an additional bursary to support with living costs which covers the research period of the MSc (by research). The fee waiver for 25/26 is £5238.00 (Home fee) and the maintenance grant is £5000.
This opportunity comes with a Home fee waiver only, which will not cover the full International fee. You will therefore need to pay the difference between the Home fee and the International fee and will need to provide evidence that you have sufficient funds to cover this.
If you need to move into a second year to complete your thesis, please note that you will not receive a tuition fee waiver or maintenance grant during this period and you will be required to pay a continuation fee.
