Research interests

My research interests are majorly on 3D visualizations, Immersive Technologies, computer gaming and computer-generated 3D character animations, as well as real-time motion capture. I collaborate with artists and creative media industries on applied research in 3D visualizations and simulation, reconstruct events from videos to enrich computer animations; 3D visualizations for GIS; new game and user-centered design in Human Computer Interaction area. I research in the value and software hardware solutions of digital technologies in cross disciplinary forms, such as climate change related issues, immersive technology for fashion & textile industries, public engagement and educations etc.

Previous Projects:

• 01/02/2020 – 01/02/2024 PI for 48 months (one-year extension granted) project funded by AHRC, "Augmented Fashion: Immersive Interactions for Sustainable Heritage in Fashion and Textiles", £1.3 million awarded, £499,000 from AHRC + £844,349 matched funding from all partners across UK & China. Continuing project from AHRC "UK-China Creative Industries Partnership Development Grants". (https://gtr.ukri.org/projects?ref=AH%2FT011483%2F1 )

• February – May 2023, Principal Investigator, Cross Platform HCI Development for Rural Museums on historical fashion experience, £15,000 received, working with HIE XpoNorth, Highland Museum of Childhood, Grantom Museum. Pooled Innovation Voucher funded by Interface.

• April – September 2023, Co-Investigator, Datalab project: AI and machine learning algorithms for Point Cloud Data processing and applications. £25,000, working with Sabre Advanced 3D Surveying Systems Ltd. Project PI: Dr. M. S. Mekala.

• March 2022 – June 2023, Mentor & Co-PI EPSRC Digital Economy Telling the Tale of Engagement Award, “Connecting Threads”, PI – Dr. Karen Cross. The Augmented Fashion project encountered a range of issues including the impact of Covid-19 and the need for project partners to rapidly digitally upskill, and the siloed and gendered nature of computing science and fashion/textile disciplines. Fashion and textile students are predominantly female, while computing science students are mostly male. Connected Threads will undertake a range of dissemination activities to introduce female fashion and textile students to the opportunities available within the growing digital fashion economy and to explore good principles of design and aesthetics with the mainly male computing science students. Activities will deliberately target youth age groups as they are the ones currently buying fast fashion, part of the wear once, disposable fashion purchase mentality that is contributing to poor sustainability practices within the fashion industry.
