About Emma Derbyshire

Emma qualified as a Registered General Nurse (BSc) at the University of Hull in 2008 and worked within local inpatient gynaecology services. Emma was involved in the initial development and implementation of the Emergency Gynaecology Unit at Hull University Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust (HUTH). In 2012 Emma qualified as a registered Midwife (PG Dip) at the University of Hull and worked in York Teaching Hospital as an rotational Midwife until 2019. During this time Emma completed her mentorship at the University of York to enable her to support and mentor students within her role. Furthermore, she gained her MSc Midwifery in 2017 at the University of Hull. The focus of interest for her MSc was the use of birth plans within contemporary midwifery practice and their impact upon women's birth experiences. Emma worked as a rotational midwife from 2019 at HUTH until joining the Antenatal and Newborn Screening team in 2020. This role also incorporated being a member of the Fetal Medicine team.

In 2022, Emma joined the University of Hull as a Midwifery Lecturer. This enabled Emma to pursue her passion in the education of future Midwives. In 2024, Emma qualified as an FHEA, demonstrating her commitment to teaching. Emma leads on the Essential Midwifery Care module in year 1, this is a fundamental module which provides students with the underpinning knowledge and skills required throughout the Midwifery programme. Additionally, Emma is involved in several other modules within the Midwifery programme and within the Learning for the Workplace module (University Certificate). Emma is a link lecturer for the antenatal clinic, antenatal day unit, triage unit and specialist midwives at HUTH.
