Research Culture

Guided by our Research Culture Action Plan, which sets strategic goals through to 2029, we’re building a supportive, inclusive, and impactful research environment.

Our priorities focus on four key areas:

  • Researcher and career development: Offering resources for professional growth
  • Time for research: Ensuring researchers have the dedicated space to innovate
  • Collaboration across disciplines: Building a collaborative culture for impactful, interdisciplinary work
  • Inclusive and responsible practices: Promoting integrity, openness, and inclusivity, with a commitment to equality, diversity, and inclusion

We are a member institution of the UK Reproducibility Network, and are committed to open research, promoting transparency and collaboration. We ensure that the values of equality, diversity and inclusion are embedded within our research environment.

The Academy for Research Knowledge Exchange (ARKE)

The Academy for Research and Knowledge Exchange (ARKE) is at the heart of our research community, offering customised training, co-ordinating mentoring for researchers, support networks, and resources for researchers at all stages of their careers. Whether you’re just starting, mid-career, or a senior researcher, ARKE provides a clear pathway to success.

ARKE offers cohort-based development programmes for early-career, mid-career, and senior researchers. Our training covers essential topics like responsible research, data management, and open research.

Researcher Development

We offer comprehensive support, training, and development to help our academics advance in their careers. Our commitment to researcher development is guided by the Researcher Development Concordat, Vitae’s Researcher Development Framework (RDF), and the HR Excellence in Research Award.

Professional support for research

Supporting your research journey goes beyond training – it involves a strong infrastructure of professional support, as well as effective frameworks and systems.

Our professional services teams offer a wide array of support for researchers, from developing your research projects and grant capture to publishing open access, managing research data and generating research impact.

The Doctoral College provides dedicated support for postgraduate research students, complementing subject-specific supervision with opportunities for skills development, tailored training, and access to specialist facilities. Its vibrant research community and interdisciplinary ethos helps students thrive academically and prepare for diverse careers beyond their degree.

THRIVE has connected me with other early career academics and given me useful knowledge on developing my research skills. I’m more confident with my grants and in identifying collaborators.
