University of Hull launches cost of living bursary for new students
The University of Hull has announced a new £1,500 bursary to support access to higher education for students from areas with historically low participation rates.
The bursary is available to new, home undergraduate and foundation year applicants for 2026 entry in eligible postcodes.
Announcing the new scheme, Interim Vice-Chancellor Professor Kevin Kerrigan, said: “Targeted financial support at the point of entry can make a real difference - particularly for students who may be questioning whether university feels achievable or affordable. This bursary reflects our values. Your postcode should never determine your potential - who you are should be more important than where you’re from.

“We want to reduce barriers at a time when the cost of living is hitting families hard, helping students to focus on their future. With this bursary, we’re giving students the chance to study, widen their horizons and thrive at the University of Hull – regardless of background.”
Eligible students will receive the bursary as cash in their first year and can spend it on what they need – whether that’s food, rent, books, bills or travel – so they can focus on making the most of their time at university.
The bursary will support new, home undergraduate or foundation year applicants for 2026 entry who apply from POLAR4 Quintile 1 or 2 postcode areas - areas of the UK with historically low participation in higher education. By focusing support here, we are helping to reduce barriers for students who face additional challenges in progressing to university.
To receive the bursary, applicants must apply and hold a firm offer from the University of Hull by 30 June 2026 and live in an eligible postcode.
The bursary covers all undergraduate full-time degrees except certain health related programmes as these degrees are eligible for additional government funding.
Eligibility can be checked using the Postcode Checker on the University’s website, and qualifying applicants will be notified automatically after receiving their offer.
