Talk and workshop: Words of Wisdom - Poverbs, Sayings and Commonplaces, from Shakespeare to the Present

This free public event, hosted at Hull History Centre by the Shakespeare and Early Modern Proverbial Culture project, invites you to spend a day exploring proverbial language from the pages of Shakespeare's plays to the sayings you grew up hearing at home.

The day begins with a lunchtime talk delivered by project researchers Mel Evans and Richard Meek, drawing on literary history and local archival sources to introduce the world of early modern proverbs. The talk will range from Shakespeare's plays and the pan-European commonplace tradition to the rich seam of regional and local material preserved in sources closer to home, including the farming notebooks of seventeenth-century East Riding gentleman Henry Best and Yorkshire dialect collections.

After lunch, we'll be running a hands-on workshop session with four activity zones, each exploring a different corner of proverbial culture. All are welcome, whatever your background or level of familiarity with Shakespeare or early modern literature.
