This event took place on Thursday 15 January 2026 and has now ended.

The University of Hull's Wilberforce Institute hosts on online session, In Conversation with the Guardian, Church of England, Heirs of Slavery & UWI Centre for Reparations Research

Join us as we bring together individuals working in various capacities on restorative justice and the legacies of slavery. They will discuss their ongoing efforts to repair historical wrongs, and you will have the chance to engage with the panel and ask questions.

Our speakers:

Prof. Sonjah N. Stanley Niaah: Professor of Cultural Studies & Director, Centre for Reparation Research, UWI, Mona Campus.

Alex Renton is descended from owners of enslaved people on both sides of his family. His maternal ancestors, the Fergussons, co-owned plantations and people in Jamaica and Tobago: they shared £3,591 in ‘compensation’ at abolition. He is co-founder of the Heirs of Slavery, a collective founded in April 2023 as an advocacy group to support movements for reconciliation and reparative justice.

Ebony Riddell Bamber is the programme director of the Guardian’s Legacies of Enslavement programme, a 10-year restorative justice initiative launched in response to research on the Guardian founders’ links to transatlantic slavery.

Charmaine Simpson is the Research Engagement Coordinator at the Church of England.

This will be a virtual session only.
