Hull Independent Cinema presents… NO OTHER CHOICE

Dir Park Chan-wook | South Korea | 2025 | 139 mins | Rating TBC | Korean, English

Longtime paper-industry veteran Yoo Man su loses his job after 25 years, upending his stable family life with wife and children. Humiliated and unable to find new work, Man-su becomes desperate to secure a position, so desperate that he hatches a dark, violent plan: he will eliminate his competition, murdering candidates to guarantee a vacancy just for him. As his moral collapse accelerates, the film becomes a biting satire of corporate cruelty, economic insecurity and the brutal pressures of survival in a cynical system. Starring Lee Byung-hun, Son Ye-jin, Park Hee-soon

REVIEWS

"The latest exhibit in the mounting body of evidence suggesting Park Chan-wook may be the most elegant filmmaker alive." Jessica Kiang, Variety

"With humour blacker than black bean noodles, the film is a masterful work of cinema which might well be Chan-wook’s masterpiece." ★★★★★ John Bleasdale, Time Out

"Not just Park's funniest film, but his most humane, too – and that's quite something for a comedy as violent as this one." ★★★★★ Nicholas Barber, BBC"

ACCESSIBILITY

Subtitles

This film will be presented with Descriptive Subtitles. In addition to reproducing dialogue, these subtitles include additional non-dialogue sounds available to a hearing audience, e.g. "(sighs)" or "(door creaks)" and song lyrics. In our experience, guests do not find the subtitles distracting, especially as the majority of our films are subtitled foreign language films. Hull Independent Cinema is working towards making our films more accessible. We have decided to present all our films with Descriptive Subtitles where available.
