EEI Colloquium Seminars | Strengthening sensor and community networks in pursuit of Smart Coasts by Phil Bresnahan

This event took place on Wednesday 18 June 2025 and has now ended.
The Centre for Water Cultures Seminar Series presents:
Strengthening sensor and community networks in pursuit of Smart Coasts by Phil Bresnahan
This talk by Phil Bresnahan will discuss the concept of 'Smart Coasts', including sensor networks, education, community engagement, and adaptive management techniques.
Phil will focus on:
- Recent COAST Lab projects related to the development and distribution of low-cost sensors for water level and water qualit
- The operation and analysis of water quality data from the SeaHawk/HawkEye CubeSat satellite mission
- Smartfin, a sensor-equipped surfboard fin for coastal research
- A UNCW on-campus weather station network that follows the SuDSlab model
About Phil Bresnahan
Phil Bresnahan is an Associate Professor in the Department of Earth and Ocean Sciences at the University of North Carolina Wilmington, and member of the University's Center for Marine Science. He's a community-engaged scholar focused on excellence in applied science, innovative engineering, and inclusive education for coastal water resource and resilience issues.
Phil's research group, the Coastal Ocean Applied Science & Technology (COAST) Lab, seeks to contribute to coastal resilience by:
- Inventing and deploying networked sensors and platforms — typically low-cost and open-source
- Engaging reciprocally with coastal communities and municipal leaders in the study and real-time dissemination of critical information
- Working toward improved ocean, climate, and coastal literacy for students of all ages
Ultimately, the group's work is targeted at investigating, teaching, and mitigating the effects of natural and human-caused coastal hazards. Especially sea level rise/flooding, warming, ocean acidification, deoxygenation, and eutrophication.
