An illustrated talk from Dr Stephanie Brown exploring the dark side of the medieval city.
Using digital maps of historical murder cases, we’ll show how historians combine archival research with data science and geospatial technologies to uncover patterns of violence in this talk programmed as part of Colliderfest.
We’ll connect the festival’s theme Elemental to medieval ideas of earth, air, fire, and water in explaining causes of death - murders in rivers, fires in houses, stabbings in fields, suffocation and breath. Audiences will leave with a new perspective on how societies in the past (and present) explain violent death.
Dr Stephanie Brown is a Lecturer in Criminology at the University of Hull and a BBC / AHRC New Generation Thinker. She is a historical criminologist with interests in the history of crime, punishment, and policing.
Sensitive issues: Historical homicide cases will be discussed, presented in an age-appropriate and accessible way.
Colliderfest is a four-day science and arts extravaganza bringing together educational events for schools, a weekend of exciting sciences and arts based activities, workshops and shows for visitors.
