Colliderfest - Murder Maps: Crime, Science, and the Medieval City

Past event
Dr Stephanie Brown

This event took place on Friday 13 March 2026 and has now ended.

An illustrated talk exploring the dark side of the medieval city.

Using digital maps of historical murder cases, we'll show how historians combine archival research with data science and geospatial technologies to uncover patterns of violence.

We'll connect the festival's theme 'Elemental' to medieval ideas of earth, air, fire, and water in explaining causes of death - murders in rivers, fires in houses, stabbings in fields, suffocation and breath. Audiences will leave with a new perspective on how societies in the past (and present) explain violent death.

Dr Stephanie Brown is a Lecturer in Criminology at the University of Hull and a BBC / AHRC New Generation Thinker. She is a historical criminologist with interests in the history of crime, punishment, and policing.

Sensitive issues: homicidal cases will be discussed and presented in an age-appropriate and accessible way.
