What is Clearing?
Clearing is a process that allows students to apply for university courses with places still available. It's commonly used by students who don't hold a university place, have changed their plans or want to explore alternative course options.
What Is Clearing?
Clearing helps universities fill any remaining places on their courses and gives students another opportunity to find the right university and course for them.
Every year, thousands of students use Clearing to secure a place at university. Some students use Clearing because they haven't applied yet, while others may have changed their mind about where or what they want to study.
You may be able to use Clearing if:
- You haven't applied to university yet.
- You aren't holding any offers.
- You've changed your plans.
- You want to explore alternative options.
- You're applying after the main UCAS deadlines.
How does Clearing work?
Once you've identified a course you're interested in, you'll usually need to contact the university directly to discuss your qualifications and circumstances.
If the university can offer you a place, you'll receive guidance on the next steps and how to confirm your place through UCAS.
