The Microscopy Suite aids research into speeding up the diagnosis of cancer and metabolic and cardiovascular diseases by imaging cells and tissues intact and in 3D.
The suite's state-of-the-art equipment includes
- a Zeiss EVO60 Scanning Electron Microscope with electron dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) and cryogenic capability
- a JEOL 2010 High Resolution Transmission Electron Microscope with EDS capability and a Gatan Ultrascan 4000 camera for excellent image quality
- a Zeiss Axio Vert.A1 inverted microscope and an Olympus IX 71 inverted microscope for wide field fluorescence microscopy
- and a Zeiss LSM710 Laser Scanning Confocal Microscope for laser scanning confocal microscopy
It also features a wet lab, a clean room containing all equipment necessary for the preparation of electron microscopy samples, an ultramicrotome, a cryostat and a critical point dryer for sample preparation.
The Microscopy Suite is open to all staff and students. We also work extensively with industry and other universities to assist with their analytical requirements.
