Dr Ma's research interest is in visual computing to explore and provide image and 3D model analysis/design tools and methods.

His expertise has applications in medical image processing and visualization, healthcare, computer games, robotics and advanced manufacturing.

Dr Ma was awarded the Wellcome Trust Seed Award in Science in December 2016.
