About the school

We are passionate about education and helping to develop the next generation of engineering professionals. We combine cutting-edge research, industrial links and excellent facilities to deliver industry-accredited undergraduate and postgraduate degree programmes.

There's a good chance you'll find the products of our research in your wallets and bags - the magnetic ink printed on the back of train and event tickets was developed here in Hull. This is just one example of the real world applications that stem from our vibrant, inclusive department.

Hull has an excellent reputation for teaching engineering. We were ranked third in the UK for overall student satisfaction in Mechanical Engineering in the National Student Survey 2020. The department has invested in state-of-the-art facilities such as the FabLab and Robotics Lab to enhance its teaching and learning experience.

Our strong focus on industry is directly channelled into the high-quality teaching and practical experience we deliver for our students. As a result, our students graduate as trained engineers who are ready to work in industries ranging from foods to pharmaceuticals – and are prepared for careers in sectors such as research, education and management.

Ideally positioned at the heart of the UK’s burgeoning ‘Energy Estuary’, we have links with major engineering employers in the region. These relationships inform our teaching and provide opportunities for our students.

Based within the Faculty of Science and Engineering, our academics collaborate with colleagues across the university and industry.

We have a track record of delivering high-quality research that tackles real-world problems. With particular expertise in the field of renewable energy and energy storage; biomedical engineering and advanced materials and acoustics.

Our degrees are accredited by industry bodies, including the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, The Institution of Engineering and Technology, the Institute of Physics and Engineering in Medicine and the Institution of Chemical Engineers (IChemE).

Greenpower Education

We’re working with charity Greenpower Education Trust, which gets young people enthusiastic about science and engineering by challenging them to design, build and race an electric car. We’re also one of the key partners in the Greenpower Street Race Hull and the Greenpower car team have a garage on campus.

Experts Test COVID-19 Face Masks

We led the testing process of COVID-19 face masks before they were distributed to frontline NHS staff in the Humber region. Timothy Dunstan, an electron microscopist, led the testing on a batch of the masks to ensure they met the standard required for use by NHS staff. Since presenting their findings, the face masks have been rolled out to local NHS hospitals.

Our research is aimed at addressing two of the most important challenges facing the world today: firstly, maintaining energy security whilst reducing environmental impact; and, secondly, improving the healthcare of an increasing, and often aging, population whilst satisfying growing patient expectations.

Our Mechatronics and Robotics degree is an exciting combination of one third computer science, one third engineering and one third mechatronics and robotics modules.
Hull is a region with a high concentration of process industry companies - BP, Total, Phillips 66, Smith & Nephew, RB and many more are right on our doorstep.
While studying Biomechanical Engineering, you'll be taught by experienced engineering professionals and by NHS clinicians and clinical engineers from local hospitals. 
Our Chemical Engineering degrees are accredited by the Institution of Chemical Engineers (IChemE). The MEng options give you the mandatory four years of study that you need for accreditation as a Chartered Engineer.
