Paramedic Science Apprenticeship

About the course

Take your first steps towards a rewarding career as a life-saving paramedic through the University of Hull’s Paramedic Science Degree Apprenticeship.

This hands-on programme combines academic study with real-world experience, allowing you to earn while you learn as part of an approved ambulance service or healthcare employer. You’ll gain the knowledge and practical skills needed to assess, treat and stabilise patients at the scene of an emergency - when every second counts.

This apprenticeship blends classroom-based learning in our award-winning Allam Medical Building with extensive on-the-job training. You’ll benefit from state-of-the-art simulation facilities and expert support from paramedic academics, practice educators and mentors throughout your learning journey.

When you successfully complete the programme, you’ll be eligible to apply for registration as a paramedic with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC).

This degree apprenticeship is part of a national initiative to develop a highly skilled paramedic workforce - providing the confidence, capability and clinical expertise needed to deliver exceptional front-line care.

Study

In year 1 - you’ll explore the pathophysiology of key conditions such as shock, heart failure, and respiratory failure, and refine your ability to assess and examine major body systems. Building on your practical experience, you’ll develop confident clinical decision-making in acute pre-hospital scenarios and learn to work effectively as part of multidisciplinary teams.

You’ll also undertake a small research project to strengthen your understanding of evidence-based practice, ethics, and data analysis - equipping you with the skills to deliver safe, collaborative, and patient-centred emergency care.

In year 2 - you’ll refine your expertise and prepare for transition into professional paramedic practice. You’ll advance your understanding of clinical pharmacology and develop the skills to manage critically ill and trauma patients with confidence. Through immersive simulation and real-world learning, you’ll strengthen your leadership, decision-making, and patient management abilities.

You’ll also explore change management and professional development, gaining insight into leading improvement within healthcare settings. By integrating theory with practice, this final year equips you with the clinical competence, critical thinking, and confidence to thrive as an autonomous, registered paramedic.
