About this Taster Session
What can literary texts tell us about our emotional lives, or how emotions were understood in the past? Participants in this interactive session will be introduced to one of the most exciting new areas of research in English Studies, and encouraged to see well-known texts – from Shakespeare to classic novels – from a fresh perspective. Students will be invited to reflect upon their emotional responses to literary texts, as well as considering how fictional characters understand and articulate their feelings. We will also think about the development of certain emotion words – like ‘sensation’, ‘sympathy’, and ‘humour’ – and how these have changed over time. You will be invited to explore some short extracts from classic literary texts in detail, and to consider the ways in which studying past emotions can foster ‘emotional intelligence’ in the present.
