About this Taster Session
Give your A-level Biology students the chance to experience university-level practical work in our state-of-the-art teaching labs.
We are inviting schools and colleges to bring groups of students to the University of Hull to carry out an extended practical investigation of the Hill reaction - a key experiment for understanding photosynthesis and the role of chloroplasts in the light-dependent reactions.
Under the guidance of our academic staff and technicians, students will:
- Prepare chloroplast extracts
- Investigate the reduction of DCPIP as an indicator of electron transport
- Explore variables affecting the rate of the reaction
- Gain hands-on experience with advanced lab equipment and techniques
- Enhance their understanding of core A-level curriculum content
This is an excellent opportunity to reinforce classroom learning, develop practical skills, and give students a taste of university science.
Who’s it for?
Students aged 16–18 in school or college.
Key topics covered
- Photosynthesis
- UV/VIS spectrophotometry
