About this course

This course has been launched at the specific request of local healthcare providers to meet a critical shortage of physiotherapists – so the career prospects for graduates could hardly be better.

You’ll become a competent practitioner with clinical skills and knowledge to assess, evaluate, formulate and implement treatment programmes in a diverse range of settings.

Our degree is approved by the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) and is accredited by the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy (CSP), so you can be confident it delivers the very latest research and treatment in patient care.

When you graduate, you’ll be able to apply for membership to the CSP and register with the HCPC, ready to take the next steps in your career as a qualified health professional.

Scheduled study hours and how you’re assessed

Throughout your degree, you’re expected to study for 1,200 hours per year. That’s based on 200 hours per 20 credit module. And it includes scheduled hours, time spent on placement and independent study. How this time is divided across the year varies and depends on the module you are studying.

How you'll be assessed depends on the course you study, and the modules you choose. You may be assessed through a mix of examinations, coursework, presentations and group projects.

Choose your modules

Each year, you’ll study modules worth a certain number of credits, and you need 120 credits per year. Most modules are 20 credits – so you’ll study six modules each year. Some longer modules, such as a dissertation, are worth more. In these cases, you’ll study fewer modules - but the number of credits will always add up to 120. Some modules are compulsory, some are optional, so you can build a course that’s right for you.

Anatomy and Physiology for Physiotherapy Practice

This module will develop your core knowledge of the structure and function of the major body systems, evolving your understanding of systems across the life stages.

Foundations of Professional Physiotherapy Practice

You’ll enhance your communication skills and learn about physiotherapy values and professional standards. You’ll then put these skills into practice on a one-week placement.

Introduction to Evidence-Based Practice

You'll be discussing research, reviews and guidelines, learning how to assess each to best influence your care for patients.

Acute and Community Rehabilitation

This module prepares you for working in acute and community rehabilitation settings. It covers assessment and management approaches to help you prepare for your first placement.

Exercise, Physical Activity, and Health Promotion

You’ll develop your understanding of human movement, biomechanics and health promotion. This knowledge will be applied in the context of exercise therapy in a range of areas.

Clinical and Professional Development 1

This module combines a six-week placement with continuing professional development (CPD) and the importance of critical reflective practice.

Cardio-respiratory Physiotherapy

Enhance your skills in working with people with cardiovascular and respiratory conditions. Learning how to support people in the long-term management of their conditions will help you become excellent in person-centred practice.

Neurological Physiotherapy

You’ll develop your assessment and management skills in working with those with neurological conditions and helping promote their independence. You’ll learn to deliver safe and effective neurological physiotherapy rehabilitation.

Clinical and Professional Development 2 and 3

These modules involve six-week placements where you get to develop your clinical practice skills. They also include continuing professional development components for you to enhance your reflective skills which are key to lifelong learning.

Musculoskeletal Physiotherapy

You’ll build on your knowledge of anatomy, physiology, biomechanics, and pathology in the context of musculoskeletal physiotherapy. You’ll develop your reasoning skills central to assessment and management of a variety of problems.

Applying Research Methods

Apply your research skills by working in small groups to identify an area you wish to investigate. You’ll learn about the process of carrying out research including how to collect and analyse data.

Physiotherapy Literature Review

This is your opportunity to make an original contribution to research by undertaking a critical review of the literature on an area of professional practice of interest to you. The format of the module will be primarily through independent study with support from your research tutor and peers.

Service Development Project

Collaborative working skills are essential in physiotherapy practice and this module will help you grow these skills as you work in small groups to develop an idea which will improve practice.

Complex Integrated Rehabilitation

You’ll enhance your physiotherapy skills and knowledge of working with more complex patient groups. You’ll develop clinical reasoning skills and embed evidence-informed approaches to practice.

Innovations and Enterprise

This module will prepare you to work in the ever-changing world of health and social care by exploring innovation and enterprise in professional practice from a business perspective. This will set you up with the critical thinking and leadership skills you need to be an innovative practitioner.

Clinical and Professional Development 4 and 5

Being in clinical practice for two six-week placement blocks will enhance your practical skills and prepare you to qualify as a confident, autonomous professional. You’ll also develop your employability skills in preparation for applying for graduate jobs.

Sport Rehabilitation Suite

We have two sports rehabilitation teaching suites based on our campus, each providing students with spaces for practical skills labs, group-based seminars and a student-led Sports Injury Clinic.

Physiology Teaching Laboratory

This is where students learn the fundamental practical skills of exercise physiology. You'll get hands-on using the latest equipment to evaluate anything from health to aerobic capacity.

Health and Human Performance Lab

This £1.5 million laboratory is a state-of-the-art facility for teaching, research and sport science support in the field of biomechanics.

Future prospects

You’ll graduate as a qualified physiotherapist and be able to register with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC).
