This four year part-time BSc degree is ideal if you want to reinforce or further a career in safety and environmental management.

It incorporates both the NEBOSH National Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety and the NEBOSH National Diploma in Environmental Management.

You enrol on the full BSc programme but you can leave at the appropriate point if you just want one or both of the NEBOSH diplomas. Or you can continue and study for the full BSc qualification, on top of your NEBOSH diplomas.

What you'll study

First year modules

  • Compulsory

    Hazardous Agents in the Workplace

    This module follows the NEBOSH National Diploma unit B syllabus. Topics covered include the nature and history of occupational health and hygiene; physiology and toxicology; chemical and biological agents; and mental health at work.

    Managing Health and Safety

    This module follows the NEBOSH National Diploma Unit A syllabus. Topics covered include health and safety risk management; control of risk; health and safety culture; health and safety law; and measuring health and safety performance.

Second year modules

  • Compulsory

    Workplace and Work Equipment

    This module follows the NEBOSH National Diploma Unit C syllabus. Topics covered include safe place of work, work equipment safety, construction safety and fire safety.

    Health and Safety Management Workplace Based Project

    This module follows the NEBOSH National Diploma unit DNI assignment. It gives you the opportunity to undertake a critical analysis of the safety management system and arrangements in place at your workplace.

Third year modules

  • Compulsory

    Management of Environmental Risk

    This module follows the NEBOSH Environmental Diploma syllabus. Topics covered include principles of environmental risk management, control strategies for environmental risk and the range of environmental audit systems.

    Legal and Organisational Factors

    This module follows the NEBOSH Environmental Diploma syllabus. Topics covered include the environmental legislative framework, enforcement of environmental law, and civil liability.

    Control Measures for Environmental Risks

    This module follows the NEBOSH Environmental Diploma syllabus. Topics covered include solid and liquid wastes, gaseous and particulate releases to atmosphere, water pollution, noise, nuisance and classification and protection of the countryside.

    Environmental Management I

    This module follows the NEBOSH Environmental Diploma syllabus. Topics covered include environmental management systems, producer responsibility and renewable energy.

Final year modules

  • Compulsory

    Disaster and Emergency Management

    Develop an understanding of the potential impact of a disaster on an organisation, as well as the methods of managing disasters and emergencies. You'll study historical development; definitions and institutions; law, guidance and sources of information; major incident investigation and public inquiries; and management of disasters and emergencies.

    Environmental Management II

    This module focuses on means of managing environmental sustainability in organisations. Topics covered include sustainable development in relation to energy, construction, transport, materials, and water and waste management.

    Law, Professional Ethics and Health and Safety Management

    This module gives insights into law and professional ethics as they apply to health and safety managers. Topics include safety management systems; performance monitoring techniques; human resources issues; role and function of expert witnesses; and the need for and function of liability insurance.

    Workplaces, Workplace Equipment and Occupational Health and Hygiene

    Develop insight into advanced issues relating to work equipment safety and occupational health and hygiene. Topics include reliability centred maintenance, control in high risk industries, liaising with architects and designers, occupational health and hygiene control programmes and emerging issues in occupational health.

How you'll study

Throughout your degree, you’re expected to study for 1,200 hours per year. That’s based on 200 hours per 20 credit module. And it includes scheduled hours, time spent on placement and independent study. How this time’s divided among each of these varies each year and depends on the course and modules you study.

Leave early with one or both NEBOSH diplomas - or stay on and complete the full BSc Honours programme.

Entry requirements

Applicants for entry onto year 1 of the BSc would normally possess the NEBOSH National General Certificate in Occupational Safety and Health or other qualification in health and safety at level 3 or above. However other qualifications and/or experience can be considered. Please include a CV and copies of certificates when applying for a place.

Applications can be made for direct entry onto year 4 of the BSc for applicants holding the NEBOSH Health and Safety Diploma or equivalent, and the NEBOSH National Diploma in Environmental Management or equivalent.
