Funding your studies

Because money doesn't grow on trees ...

At the University of Hull, we recognise the significant investment - personal and financial - made by you in choosing to study for a postgraduate research degree. We also recognise how difficult it can be knowing where to start, with so many funding options available. Scholarships, loans and sponsorship are just some of the sources of funding that could help you finance your studies.

PhD Scholarships

Without quality researchers, there can be no quality research. This is why we make a significant investment into our PhD scholarships and work with several third-party funding organisations.

Postgraduate Doctoral Loans

UK and EU students who haven’t secured a scholarship can take out a Doctoral Loan to help with tuition fees and living costs. They provide up to £28,673 for full-time and part-time PhDs in all subject areas.

Postgraduate loans for Masters level research degrees

Looking to study an MRes, MA by Research or MSc by Research? Postgraduate loans provide up to £12,167 for research Masters degrees in all subject areas, for students from England and the EU. Loans are not means-tested and the earliest you’ll start repaying is when your annual income is over £21,000.

Employer-sponsorship

If you’re an employee considering postgraduate study related to your job, your employer may have funding schemes available to study on a part-time basis. Check with your HR team, training department or line manager.

Alternative guide to postgraduate funding

If you’re a current student, you can access this on campus or create an account using your university email address to search the funding database. If you are not yet a student, you can email hefunding@hull.ac.uk to be given access. The alternative guide contains a huge database of funding opportunities, comprehensive guidance, and tools to help you prepare a winning grant application.

How much does a research degree cost?

Information on fees is available on our postgraduate degree pages. Your tuition fees cover most costs associated with your programme (including registration, tuition, supervision assessment and examination). There are some extra costs that you might have to pay, or choose to pay, depending on your programme of study and the decisions you make.

You’ll need to take into account your living costs. This could include accommodation, travel and food - to name just a few.
