Undergraduate Applications

When you apply to Hull, we see more than just your grades.

The University of Hull is committed to the equal and fair consideration of all applicants to all programmes of study.

Making a contextual offer

When you apply to the University of Hull, we look beyond your predicted (or confirmed) grades to understand your background, motivation and aspirations for pursuing a higher education programme with us. A contextual offer may be made to our UK based applicants with the aim to promote access and fairness. This allows us to look at more than grades in the application process.

We know that talented students can achieve their potential whatever their background or family circumstances.

What is a contextual offer*?

Contextual offers are a reduced offer of up to two grades below the published tariff for UK based undergraduate applicants who are working towards their level 3 qualifications. You could be eligible if any of the following applies to you:

  • you have spent time in local authority care (such as foster or residential care)
  • if you are the first generation in your family to apply for a Higher Education programme
  • you live in a UK postcode area with low progression into higher education study

The data for eligible postcodes is provided by the Office for Students. They use a range of classification groups known as POLAR (the participation of local areas) which identify places where young people are less likely to enter higher education. The postcode data we are using is POLAR4 data published in 2018.

Find out more about POLAR data.

*Please note unconditional offers or contextual offers cannot be made to applications for healthcare programmes such as Nursing, Midwifery, Physiotherapy, Paramedic Science, ODP and Social Work or Law/Politics with legislative studies programmes due to statutory and regulatory body entry requirements, and limited placement availability.

Information for care leavers/looked after children:

  • Your application: when you apply via UCAS there is an option to let us know that you’re a care leaver. If you answer yes to this question, we can make you a contextual offer which may be either an unconditional offer or a lower contextual offer depending on your predicted grades
  • Funding:  is available to help with tuition fees and living costs.
  • Accommodation: we also offer a range of accommodation options and contracts depending on your circumstances.

If you have already achieved A level/BTEC/WJEC/Access to Higher Education grades and are now considering Higher Education study, get in touch with our Admissions team and see what courses could be available to you.

You can read a comprehensive summary of our policies and practices relating to the admission process here.
