The Culture, Place and Policy Institute (CPPI) is a research institute created by the University of Hull to stimulate research on cultural activities, cultural policy and culture-led urban and regional development across the University.

We work in partnership with local government, arts and cultural organisations, funding bodies and other national and international stakeholders to deliver academic research, as well as consultancy, public engagement and PhD supervision.

"Our hope is that our evaluation of Hull’s City of Culture will help inform the design and implementation of the post-2017 legacy strategy and help make Hull a blueprint for cities considering cultural investment as a tool for urban development."

Hull UK City of Culture 2017

As the exclusive academic research partner, the University of Hull has been at the heart of Hull’s UK City of Culture initiative from bidding stage onwards. The Culture, Place and Policy Institute (CPPI) were tasked with understanding and evaluating the impacts and processes of Hull UK City of Culture 2017 and our work has resulted in a portfolio of evaluation and research insights that can help inform future public policy at local, national and international levels.

Our multidisciplinary research expertise utilises diverse academic disciplines (from cultural management and policy to urban and regional geography, spatial planning and tourism studies). The key aim is to achieve a better understanding of the transformative potential of cultural resources, particularly at city and regional level, in areas ranging from cultural participation to health, economic development, intercultural exchange and building social capital.
