The Challenge

The NHS is facing more challenges and greater health inequalities than ever before. The concept of health innovation hubs, situated at the front line and working in partnership across the local health system, has been carefully designed as a practical solution to known challenges. These hubs support healthcare providers to create the conditions that will enable faster and more effective uptake of innovations and improvements.

The mission of the Health Innovation Hub is to cultivate an environment in their local health and care system that nurtures innovation, so that the change local people need is implemented effectively, efficiently and sustainably. The hubs are designed to put great ideas into practice, in order to make a positive improvement to health and social care.

The Health Innovation Hub is a collaboration between the University of Hull and the Hull University Teaching Hospitals Trust (HUTH) to help health professionals to make the right connections to accelerate innovation in health and social care, making it easy to partner with the right academic expertise at the University. Access specialist world-leading expertise and high tech development and testing facilities to achieve these new innovations quickly and effectively.

The hub works works closely with the national and regional health Innovation groups such as Yorkshire & Humber Health Innovation Network, The Northern Health Science Alliance (NHSA) and Innovation, Research and Improvement system (IRIS) which is part of Humber & North Yorkshire Integrated Care Board (ICB).

The hub aims to encourage engagement between NHS and academic collaborators to address unmet health needs within the local health system, specifically within Hull University Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust Group with the support of clinical teams. The hub would also engage with commercial organisations as required at the right stage to take forward the innovation projects.

The Approach

The Health Innovation Hub is a collaboration between the University of Hull and the Hull University Teaching Hospitals Trust (HUTH) to speed up the adoption of the most effective innovations that ultimately overcome healthcare challenges and transform lives.

The Health Innovation Hub:

  • provides a platform for collaboration and innovation.
  • identifies the innovation needs of the clinical and non-clinical teams from HUTH and engages with suitable partners from the academic teams to help address them.
  • identifies suitable financial support, funding models and bids to support the progress of the projects.
  • makes it easy to provide updates on the Hub (self-editable), which will help to build audience and participation.

Aims

  • The Health Innovation Hub will help to create, nurture and test innovations at pace and scale, in order to take to market more quickly, overcome challenges, and transform lives
  • We want to encourage engagement with the hub from both NHS and academic collaborators
  • We want to encourage collaboration and ongoing dialogue about innovation
  • We want to increase awareness of the existence of the Health Innovation Hub and its potential to transform healthcare

The projects from the Health Innovation Hub could drive significant improvements for the local health system and would have an impact on the following areas:
