What you'll study

The future of business is sustainability. And Hull's at the forefront of that movement thanks to its association with Siemens, Green Port Hull and similar organisations.

Besides the three-year option, there are more specialised versions of this course.

First year

All modules are subject to availability and this list may change at any time.

The course consists of 120 credits per year. Most modules are 20 credits, meaning you’ll study six modules each year. Some longer modules, such as a dissertation, are worth more (e.g. 40 credits). In these cases, you’ll study fewer modules - but the number of credits will always add up to 120.

Compulsory modules

Core and compulsory modules are fundamental to achieving the learning outcomes for your course and must be studied.

  • Accounting and Finance

    This module delivers essential basic accounting and finance knowledge. You'll study topics including measuring financial performance; analysing and interpreting financial statements; capital investment appraisal decisions; financing decisions; working capital management; cost behaviour; cost-volume-profit analysis; absorption costing; variance analysis and budgeting.

  • Marketing

    This module introduces you to core marketing theories and concepts such as segmentation, targeting and positioning, consumer behaviour, and marketing mix. You'll have the opportunity to apply your understanding of these different concepts in a real-life business project.

  • Personal and Professional Skills for Contemporary Organisations

    This module introduces the organisational behaviour and HRM concepts that you'll need for the course. Areas of focus include individual difference, personal development, people management and leadership. You'll also concentrate on effective communication and information; skill evaluating; and strategy, culture, and referencing.

  • Business Environments

    This module introduces you to the wider environments - economic, political, social, legal, cultural - that businesses operate in and in turn help shape. You'll examine the tools for assessing how various market structures and changes in these environments may impact upon the conduct and performance of business.

  • Operations, Supply Chain and Business Practices

    You will explore how modern businesses are developing their operations management and supply chain practices to enhance their competitiveness. You will learn new tools and techniques that can help you to understand, analyse and evaluate the complexities inherent in today's organisations.

  • World Economy

    This module provides an introduction to the world economy. You'll study the nature of, and change in, the world economy from an economic perspective complemented by a social, political and institutional understanding. You'll develop insights into key contemporary issues associated with international trade, international finance, regional groupings such as the European Community, climate change and others.

  • Responsible Business in Society

    Examine the challenges to business practice from the social and environmental responsibility agenda. You'll explore concepts like responsible business, corporate social responsibility, business ethics and sustainable development. And you'll learn to understand them in a global context.

  • Organisational Management

    You will explore different approaches to organisational management and be given the opportunity to integrate theory and practice. You'll consider a variety of organising practices, the assumptions that underpin them, ranging from the highly mechanistic to more holistic, systemic perspectives, and the outcomes achieved in complex, dynamic operating environments.

  • Sustainable Business and Innovation

    Develop insights into the major trends, challenges and innovative concepts relating to business sustainability and corporate responsibility. You will be introduced to alternative business models, innovations and practices, exploring business-focused solutions to pressing challenges.

  • Management Systems and Standards for Sustainability

    You will be introduced to the field of sustainable operations and management systems, standards and certifications for business and product sustainability. You'll learn how to develop and implement a sustainability management system and how to report on it using common industry standards.

Optional modules

  • European Business

    This module enhances your understanding of the EU, both in terms of internal policy and its commercial relations with the rest of the world, including the US and emerging nations.

  • Information Management and Principles of Data Science

    The module examines the role of data science within contemporary consulting and explores its management dimensions. You'll develop an understanding of how to establish a better connection between data and business value.

  • Internet, e-Commerce and Emerging Technologies

    Discover exciting digital technologies that are emerging and affecting the dynamics of e-commerce. You will learn to develop a website or mobile-app without any coding and to communicate its requirements effectively from a business perspective.

  • The Organisational and Environmental Context of HRM

    This module aims to develop your understanding of how organisational and environmental context informs human resource management in terms of its design, organisation, leadership, ethics and practice.

  • Learning and Development

    This module focuses on the practice and theory of learning and development. Illustrating how to critically evaluate its role and influence on organisational success.

  • Understanding Entrepreneurship

    Learn about entrepreneurship and SMEs from a policy and research perspective. You'll develop an understanding of the factors which contribute to successful and unsuccessful entrepreneurship, how entrepreneurship differs around the world, how governments encourage entrepreneurship and how one researches entrepreneurs.

  • Engaging with Entrepreneurial Organisations

    Working with a local  SME, you'll have the opportunity to solve a problem or produce a plan for the organisation. Projects will depend on the SMEs we work with, but this module is highly practical and hands on, allowing you to apply what you have to a real SME problem or opportunity.

  • Procurement and Supply Management

    This module explains how procurement ensures the effective supply of the materials that businesses need. Core concepts include managing business relationships, planning operations and problem solving.

  • Supply Chain Information Management and Big Data

    This module discusses the role that information management and big data can play for the supply chain. It will introduce you to the use of qualitative and quantitative methods for big data, text mining and social media mining analysis.

  • Consumer and Business Buyer Behaviour

    The consumer should be at the heart of any marketing activity. In this module, you'll build a deeper understanding of consumer behaviour, learning how to use this information to develop effective marketing plans and communications, as well as developing products and services to satisfy unmet needs.

  • Integrated Marketing Communications and Branding

    Develop your critical understanding of the role integrated marketing and communications plays in building and sustaining brand identity and equity.

  • Research Methods

    This module offers the exciting opportunity to prepare and undertake a small action research project. It will introduce you to research methodology, the need for ethical approval, how to find and analyse data and how to use literature to support the formulation of a research question. The module will also help you to become better critical readers of others’ research.

  • Summer School

    Broaden your experience in an international setting and study in one of our partner institutions for up to three weeks over the summer. This module can count towards your degree.

  • Passport Languages

    The Passport Foreign Language scheme provides you with the opportunity to develop your language skills. You can join a module to learn a new foreign language or to improve your existing language skills and intercultural competence.

    This module considers business strategy and strategic decision making in diverse organisational contexts. You'll learn to use strategic analysis to make choices that create stakeholder value and strategic advantage in the complex business world.

  • International Business

    This module focuses on the core concepts and practical applications of cross border business activities. You will explore the controversies and complexities surrounding international business issues and environments.

  • Sustainability Reporting and Communication

    Increasingly, society expects companies to report what their impacts are and explain how they are addressing them. In this module, you'll explore the questions of what companies should report on, as well as why and how to communicate it effectively to specialist and non-specialist audiences.

  • Supply Chain Sustainability and the Environment

    Explore sustainability practices in various manufacturing and service organisations, covering issues like responsible procurement and fair trade, humanitarian logistics and disaster relief.

Choose one of the following

  • Dissertation or Research Project

    You can choose to complete a dissertation worth 40 credits (across two modules) or a shorter research project at 20 credits (for one module) on a subject relevant to your degree.

  • SMART: Problem-Solving for Complex Systems

    Learn to evaluate complex problems – taking into account multiple dimensions and stakeholder perspectives – to anticipate consequences and make appropriate decisions.

    Explore the strategies adopted by employers to manage their employees. The workplace is the site of potential mutuality of interests but also of potential conflict. You will study how this is understood and managed through individual and collective practices.

  • Organisation in the Digital Economy

    The internet and emerging digital technologies present business and society with all kinds of opportunities and challenges. Here's your chance to engage with the new management mindsets needed to address them.

  • Global Logistics and Port Management

    On this module, you’ll learn about the structure of global supply chains, international procurement and transport, supply chain security, and the complexity of decision making.

  • Services Marketing

    Businesses are linked to their customers through services. This module is concerned with managing customer experience and ensuring the organisation is service-centric so that higher outcomes such as loyalty and customer satisfaction can be realised.

  • Business Project Management

    This module addresses project management, covering a range of concepts, tools, techniques and approaches. You’ll explore factors affecting project success and failure.

  • Managing Your Money – Personal Financial Planning

    Prepare for the financial challenges and opportunities of life after university. Discuss the monetary issues of being a third year, and cover topics including tax, student loans, credit, debt, pensions, insurance, savings and investments.

  • Comparative International Human Resource Management

    Consider complex workplace dynamics and cross-cultural and multinational factors. You’ll learn the strategies and practice of human resource management in international contexts.

Our business management courses are ideal if you want to develop a skill-set that will help you to make sense of the complex, diverse business world. By focusing on sustainability, you'll gain specialist knowledge of one of the biggest issues facing our planet – one which now has a huge influence on business practices.

You'll examine how organisations work and discover how to seize the right opportunities at the right time. But you'll also learn how to be a responsible manager who considers legal and ethical issues. You'll study under experts who'll bring the theory to life with case studies, live projects and guest speakers.

Teaching and learning

Throughout your degree, you’re expected to study for 1,200 hours per year. That’s based on 200 hours per 20 credit module. And it includes scheduled hours, time spent on placement and independent study. How this time’s divided among each of these varies each year and depends on the course and modules you study.

Scheduled hours typically include lectures, seminars, tutorials, workshops, and supervised laboratory and studio sessions. The types of scheduled lessons you’ll have depend on the course you study.

Placement hours typically include time spent on a work placement, studying abroad, or field trips.

Independent study is the time outside your scheduled timetable, where you’ll be expected to study independently. This typically involves coursework, assignments, reading, preparing presentations and exam revision.

Entry requirements

2019 Tariff points: 112 points. Points can be from any qualification on the UCAS tariff, but must include at least 80 points from

Fees and funding

  • Home/EU: £9,250 per year*
  • International: £14,000 per year

*The amount you pay may increase each year, in line with inflation - but capped to the Retail Price Index (RPI).

UK and EU students can take out a tuition fee loan to cover the cost of their course, and UK students can take out a maintenance loan of up to £8,700 to cover living costs.

Substantial discounts are available for International students.

Additional costs

Your tuition fees will cover most costs associated with your programme (including registration, tuition, supervision, assessment and examination).

Remember, you’ll still need to take into account your living costs. This could include accommodation, travel and food – to name just a few. 

Future prospects

A range of possibilities are open to our graduates from exciting employment opportunities - particularly in the field of sustainability - to starting your own business.

Recent graduates have gone on to work with companies including Deloitte, the Prince’s Trust, Npower, Enterprise Rent-A-Car, Asda and Santander.

Positions secured include working as administration managers, trainee bank managers, property managers and quality assurance managers.

Other graduates elect to progress to further study, either here at Hull or with universities all over Britain and around the world.
