What you'll study

The course commences with a broad-based engineering education, emphasising the application of mechanical engineering and manufacturing.

Your studies will include a combination of lectures, tutorials, laboratory sessions, computer laboratory work and workshop practicals. The study of manufacturing methods, commercial management and production management – along with the mathematics to underpin the mechanical engineering theories you encounter – ensures that your education is comprehensive and multidisciplinary.

Your studies will be complemented by a specialist ‘design and make’ module which utilises our machine shops – an important professional requirement.

All BEng and MEng Mechanical Engineering programmes are accredited by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) and the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET). BEng programmes fully meet the academic requirements for registration as an Incorporated Engineer and partly meet the academic requirements for registration as a Chartered Engineer. MEng programmes fully meet the academic requirements for registration as a Chartered Engineer.

In the final BEng year, you will undertake a major project which gives you the opportunity to demonstrate your skills as an engineer. You will develop a deeper knowledge of mechanical engineering in line with your particular interests.

Mechanical and manufacturing engineers are among the pioneers of tomorrow’s technology through creativity and innovation. At the University of Hull, you will benefit from a real-world, hands-on approach to the subject. Entry requirements

2018 Tariff points: 112 points. Points can be from any qualification on the UCAS tariff, but must include at least 80 points from 

  • A levels
  • BTEC Subsidiary Diploma, Diploma or Extended Diploma
  • OCR Cambridge Technical Introductory Diploma, Diploma or Extended Diploma
  • CACHE Diploma or Extended Diploma
  • Irish Leaving Certificate
  • Scottish Highers
  • Welsh Baccalaureate Advanced Diploma
  • or a combination of appropriate Level 3 qualifications
  • Applicants should have an A level in Maths at Grade C or above, or alternative Level 3 qualification.

Alternative qualifications

  • IB Diploma: 28 including 5 in HL Maths
  • Access to HE Diploma: Pass Science or Engineering based HE Diploma with minimum of 45 credits at merit or higher, including 18 credits at merit in Maths.
  • BTEC L3 Extended Diploma: Engineering including merit in core and optional maths units.

If you require a Tier 4 student visa to study or if your first language is not English you will be required to provide acceptable evidence of your English language proficiency level.

Fees and funding

  • Home/EU: £9,250
  • International: £16,000

Fees may be subject to permitted inflationary increases in future years. 

UK and EU students can take out a tuition fee loan to cover the cost of their course, and UK students can take out a maintenance loan of up to £8,700 to cover living costs.

Future Prospects

Prospects for engineering graduates continue to be excellent and many receive firm offers of employment before graduating. A report from industry body Engineering UK highlighted a current annual shortfall of 55,000 skilled workers in the engineering sector*.

Your career prospects are enhanced by our close collaboration with industry to ensure that the course meets the requirements of potential employers. You will also benefit from a wealth of advice, information and guidance provided by the University Careers Service, both during your degree and after graduation. Unlike most universities, we do not impose a time limit after which careers support is withdrawn.

With regard to career-entry salaries, engineering graduates (along with those from mathematical sciences, technology and architecture courses) are second only to medicine and dentistry graduates*. Chartered Engineers enjoy significant pay rises that continue to outstrip the cost of living.
