What you'll study

First year

The course consists of 120 credits per year. Most modules are 20 credits, meaning you’ll study six modules each year. Some longer modules, such as a dissertation, are worth more (e.g. 40 credits). In these cases, you’ll study fewer modules - but the number of credits will always add up to 120.

Core modules

  • Personal and Professional Skills for Contemporary Organisations

    This module introduces the organisational behaviour and HRM concepts that you'll need for the course. Areas of focus include individual difference and personal development, and people management and leadership. You'll also concentrate on effective communication and information; skill evaluating; and strategy, culture, and referencing.

  • Accounting and Finance

    This module delivers essential basic accounting and finance knowledge. You'll study topics including measuring financial performance; analysing and interpreting financial statements; capital investment appraisal decisions; financing decisions; working capital management; cost behaviour; cost-volume-profit analysis; absorption costing; variance analysis; and budgeting.

  • Business Environments

    This module introduces you to the wider environments - economic, political, social, legal, cultural - that businesses operate in and in turn help shape. You'll examine the tools for assessing how various market structures and changes in these environments may impact upon the conduct and performance of business.

  • Operations, Supply Chain and Business Practices

    You will explore how modern businesses are developing their operations management and supply chain practices to enhance their competitiveness. You will learn new tools and techniques that can help you to understand, analyse and evaluate the complexities inherent in today's organisations.

  • Marketing

    This module introduces you to core marketing theories and concepts such as segmentation, targeting and positioning, consumer behaviour, and marketing mix. You'll have the opportunity to apply your understanding of these different concepts in a real-life business project.

Optional modules

Optional modules let you tailor the course to your interests. Please note, the availability of optional modules can vary each trimester.

  • Summer School

    Broaden your experience in an international setting and study in one of our partner institutions for up to three weeks over the summer. This module can count towards your degree.

  • World Economy

    This module provides an introduction to the world economy. You'll study the nature of, and change in, the world economy from an economic perspective complemented by a social, political and institutional understanding. You'll develop insights into key contemporary issues associated with international trade, international finance, regional groupings such as the European Community, climate change and others.

  • Responsible Business in Society

    Examine the challenges to business practice from the social and environmental responsibility agenda. You'll explore concepts like responsible business, corporate social responsibility, business ethics and sustainable development. And you'll learn to understand them in a global context.

  • Consumer and Business Buyer Behaviour

    The consumer should be at the heart of any marketing activity. In this module, you'll build a deeper understanding of consumer behaviour and how you can use this information to develop effective marketing plans, marketing communications and develop products and services to satisfy unmet needs.

  • Integrated Marketing Communication and Branding

  • Organisational Management

    You will explore different approaches to organisational management and be given the opportunity to integrate theory and practice. You'll consider a variety of organising practices, the assumptions that underpin them (ranging from the highly mechanistic to more holistic, systemic perspectives), and the outcomes achieved in complex, dynamic operating environments.

  • The Organisational and Environmental Context of HRM

    This module aims to develop your understanding of how organisational and environmental context informs HR management in terms of its design, organisation, leadership, ethics and practice.

  • Understanding Entrepreneurship

    Learn about entrepreneurship and SMEs from a policy and research perspective. You'll develop an understanding of the factors which contribute to successful and unsuccessful entrepreneurship, how entrepreneurship differs around the world, how governments encourage entrepreneurship and how one researches entrepreneurs.

  • Sustainable Business and Innovation

    Develop insights into the major trends, challenges and innovative thinking on business sustainability and corporate responsibility. You'll be introduced to alternative business models, innovations and practices, and will explore business-focused solutions to pressing challenges.

  • Organisation in the Digital Economy

    The internet and emerging digital technologies present business and society with all kinds of opportunities and challenges. Here's your chance to engage with the new management mindsets needed to address them.

  • Procurement and Supply Chain Operations

    This module explains how procurement ensures the effective supply of the materials that businesses need. Core concepts include managing business relationships, planning operations and problem solving.

  • Financial Reporting

    This module covers a wide range of the regulatory aspects of financial reporting. It will enable you to understand and evaluate the meaning and construction of traditional financial statements of companies, according to international accounting standards

  • Financial Management

    Develop a fundamental understanding of investment, financing and dividend decisions. You'll be introduced to the basic techniques and concepts needed to evaluate complex financial management problems.

  • Decision Making for Managers

    You will explore decision making and a range of factors that can impact upon decision makers in organisational settings. You'll consider the potential for decision making to become compromised by, amongst other things, bias and overly narrow consideration of complex situations, as well as looking at ways to improve the effectiveness of decision making.

  • Passport Languages

    The Passport Foreign Language Scheme provides you with the opportunity to develop your language skills. You can join a module to learn a new foreign language or to improve your existing language skills and intercultural competence. Languages include French, German, Spanish, Italian, Dutch, Chinese, Japanese and Russian.

  • Summer School

  • Research Methods

    This module offers the exciting opportunity to prepare and undertake a small action research project. It will introduce you to research methodology, the need for ethical approval, how to find and analyse data, and how you can use literature to support the formulation of a research question. The module will also help you to become better critical readers of others’ research.

  • Services Marketing

    Through service(s), businesses are linked to their customers. This module is concerned with managing customer experience and ensuring the organisation is service centric so that higher outcomes such as loyalty and customer satisfaction can be realised.

  • Business Strategies

    This module considers business strategy and strategic decision making in diverse organisational contexts. You'll learn to use strategic analysis to make choices which create stakeholder value and strategic advantage in the complex business world.

  • Strategic Marketing Planning

    This module will introduce you to the stages of an organisation’s marketing plan as: strategic analysis; strategic choice; managing resources; strategic implementation; and monitoring and control to fulfil its strategic marketing objectives in order to gain competitive advantage.

  • Dissertation or Research Project

  • Passport Languages

More about this course

Our business management programmes are perfect if you want to develop a broad skill-set that will help you deal with the complexity and diversity of the modern business world. You'll examine how organisations work and discover how to seize the right opportunities at the right time. But you'll also learn how to be a responsible manager by considering legal and ethical issues. You'll study under leading experts who'll bring theory to life with case studies, live projects and guest speakers. Teaching and learning

Throughout your degree, you’re expected to study for 1,200 hours per year. That’s based on 200 hours per 20 credit module. And it includes scheduled hours, time spent on placement and independent study. How this time’s divided among each of these varies each year and depends on the course and modules you study.

Scheduled hours typically include lectures, seminars, tutorials, workshops, and supervised laboratory and studio sessions. The types of scheduled lessons you’ll have depend on the course you study.

Placement hours typically include time spent on a work placement, studying abroad, or field trips.

Independent study is the time outside your scheduled timetable, where you’ll be expected to study independently. This typically involves coursework, assignments, reading, preparing presentations and exam revision.

Entry requirements

During Clearing we look at all of your qualifications and experience, not just your academic grades – you're more than just letters on a page!

Some courses do still have requirements such as previous study in your subject area, or specific GCSE grades. Others have additional requirements such as an interview or a satisfactory DBS check.

If you require a Tier 4 student visa to study or if your first language is not English you will be required to provide acceptable evidence of your English language proficiency level.

This course requires academic IELTS 6.0 overall, with no less than 5.5 in each skill. For other English language proficiency qualifications acceptable by this University, please click here.

Fees and funding

  • Home/EU: £9,250 per year*
  • International: £13,500 per year*

*The amount you pay may increase each year, in line with inflation - but capped to the Retail Price Index (RPI).

UK and EU students can take out a tuition fee loan to cover the cost of their course, and UK students can take out a maintenance loan of up to £8,700 to cover living costs.

Substantial discounts are available for International students.

Additional costs

Your tuition fees will cover most costs associated with your programme (including registration, tuition, supervision, assessment and examination).

There are some extra costs that you might have to pay, or choose to pay, depending on your programme of study and the decisions you make. The list below has some examples, and any extra costs will vary.

  • Books (you’ll have access to books from your module reading lists in the library, but you may want to buy your own copies
  • Optional field trips
  • Study abroad (including travel costs, accommodation, visas, immunisation)
  • Placement costs (including travel costs and accommodation)

  • Laptop (you’ll have access to laptops and PC’s on campus, but you may want to buy your own)

  • Graduation (gown hire and photography)

Remember, you’ll still need to take into account your living costs. This could include accommodation, travel and food – to name just a few. 

Future prospects

A range of possibilities are open to our graduates from exciting employment opportunities – particularly in marketing – to starting your own business.

Recent graduates have gone on to work with companies including Npower, Enterprise Rent-A-Car, Asda, JJB Sports and Santander.

As well working as marketing managers, our students have gone on to work as administration managers, events coordinators, financial administrators and information managers.

Other graduates progress to further study, either here at Hull or with universities all over Britain and around the world.
