Biomedical Science applies biological principles to medicine. It explores the normal physiological processes and functions of the human body to appreciate disease processes, diagnosis and treatment. This is a dynamic topic with continual advancements in health care and science driving innovation and research. Accredited by the Institute of Biomedical Science, this three-year degree equips you with the academic knowledge and practical skills suitable for employment in a variety of settings including working at the cutting edge of health research, an area of science that can ultimately save people’s lives. Your learning experience is underpinned by research-active staff whose innovative work has been ranked by independent bodies as internationally excellent, and a programme designed with major input from Hull and East Yorkshire Hospitals NHS Trust.

Our recently opened Allam Building, a £10 million centre for cancer and cardiovascular research, provides a state-of-the-art learning environment on campus. We also offer you the flexibility to develop professionally and to specialise in a clinical discipline area of your choice. Our multi-disciplinary, laboratory-based approach, together with constant curriculum reviews, keep our teaching up to date with the latest developments in the rapidly changing field of Biomedical Science. The option of a foundation year is ideal for students who lack the academic background to progress directly to the full BSc programme. Our graduates go on to exciting career opportunities including specialist laboratory work, expert and consultant roles, research, education and management positions, or to study for higher degrees at Masters and PhD level.

Entry requirements

2018 Tariff points: 112 points. Points can be from any qualification on the UCAS tariff, but must include at least 80 points from 

  • A levels
  • BTEC Subsidiary Diploma, Diploma or Extended Diploma
  • OCR Cambridge Technical Introductory Diploma, Diploma or Extended Diploma
  • CACHE Diploma or Extended Diploma
  • Irish Leaving Certificate
  • Scottish Highers
  • Welsh Baccalaureate Advanced Diploma
  • or a combination of appropriate Level 3 qualifications
  • Applicants should have A level Biology/Applied Science at Grade C or above (or merit from relevant BTEC). Applicants taking the reformed A-level must also Pass the practical element.

Fees may be subject to permitted inflationary increases in future years. 

UK and EU students can take out a tuition fee loan to cover the cost of their course, and UK students can take out a maintenance loan of up to £8,700 to cover living costs.

Substantial discounts are available for International students.

Future Prospects

When you graduate you will be able to offer numerous skills, opening up the possibility of a career in many areas. As a scientist, your analytical and problem-solving skills, along with your experience in research, will be much sought after by employers. We have excellent links with local industry, hospitals and research units – many of our Biomedical Science students gain employment straight away.

Once qualified, some biomedical scientists work in laboratories for the NHS and private sector. Modern laboratories are the hi-tech hubs of hospitals, at the cutting edge of medical technology. You will be eligible to work in academic research, in the health service, in biomedical scientist roles, in medical institutions and in education.

Our graduates go into a diverse range of other careers with employers such as ConocoPhillips, RB (formerly Reckitt Benckiser), the Civil Service, Boots, various hospitals and the NHS. Many students have also chosen to stay on for higher degrees both at Masters and PhD level.
