This course is designed for mental health professionals including nurses, occupational therapists, psychologists, counsellors, doctors and social workers to extend knowledge of CBT theory and practice. Studying this course will enable you to provide CBT to clients with common or more serious mental health problems.

In 2022 we are offering one pathway within the Serious Mental health Problem programme.

  • Postgraduate Diploma in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy for Psychosis and Bipolar Disorder (part-time 120 credits at level 7)
  • Postgraduate Certificate in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy for Psychosis and Bipolar Disorder (top up) (route for students taking 60 academic credits at level 7).

Information about psychological intervention competence frameworks and identified serious mental illness conditions treated in secondary care services can be found on the UCL website.

Entry requirements

Those enrolling on the course should be members of the Health and Care Professional Council (HCPC), other professional body or satisfy the BABCP KSA requirements. All candidates who apply to the course from September 2018 onwards will be expected to enrol as members of the BABCP and so endorse the ethical and professional codes of practice of the organisation. This is a new requirement to enable the course to comply with new BABCP course accreditation guidelines.

Study is at academic level 7 so students will usually be expected to have a 2:1 honours degree or international equivalent academic study in a discipline connected to mental health and further vocational mental health experience. Applicants with a 2:2 honours degree or those who have not completed an honours degree will be considered on an individual. The applications of students without a core professional training in mental health will be evaluated using the BABCP Knowledge Skills and Attitudes (KSA) Framework

Students will be expected to be working for a service with NHS funding which provides mental health care.  Priority will be given to those that can demonstrate that they will be able to use their skills to benefit people with serious mental illness.

Students will be expected to have obtained agreement for service release to complete their studies, and should have access to a potential CBT caseload within a clinical setting. During supervised practice modules, students will be required to access in-service CBT supervision from an accredited CBT therapist and clinical cases suitable for CBT. During the course of the supervision modules it is essential that students obtain support and agreement from their service for the regular video-recording of clinical sessions.

In order to ensure our students have a rich learning and student experience, most of our programmes have a mix of domestic and international students. We reserve the right to close applications early to either group, if application volumes suggest that this blend cannot be achieved. In addition, existing undergraduate students at the University of Hull have a guaranteed ‘Fast Track’ route to any postgraduate programme, subject to meeting the entry criteria (excluding Social Work).

Future prospects

This course aims to train NHS and other clinicians in evidence-based therapy, to extend knowledge of CBT theory and practice, to provide CBT to clients with serious mental illness and other conditions within secondary mental health and other care services.

Comprehensive Assessment of At Risk Mental States Clinician and Supervisor Training

CAARMS is considered to be a useful tool to help clinicians identify those who are at risk and those who have experienced a first episode of psychosis (FEP). There is a high demand within Early Intervention for Psychosis (EIP) services for this training and the course will be aimed at increasing the number of individuals who are upskilled in being able to deliver the assessment within early intervention services.

The University of Hull has been commissioned by Health Education England to deliver the CAARMS training in 2022/23. 6 cohorts will be delivered between May 2022 and March 2023. It is anticipated that this provision will support services in need of access to CAARMS training and will compliment the areas of good practice in services where robust CAARMS training is in place.

CAARMS Practitioner Training
Duration: 2 days

Recruitment for the course will be aimed at clinicians working in an early intervention psychosis service or demonstrably similar services providing assessment of early intervention for ARMS. An ARMS service maybe a stand-alone service or part of the EIP provision.

If you are interested in this training then you need to discuss this with your service manager who will be working with HEE and The University to allocate places on the training.

CAARMS Supervisor Training
Duration: 1 day

Recruitment for the course will be aimed at clinicians working in an early intervention psychosis service or demonstrably similar services providing assessment of early intervention for ARMS. An ARMS service maybe a stand-alone service or part of the EIP provision. It is anticipated that the majority of those who complete the 2 day course will also complete the supervisor training. For clinicians who have a good amount of experience of delivering the CAARMS tool it is possible to complete the supervisor training day without having to complete the 2 day course.

If you are interested in this training then you need to discuss this with your service manager who will be working with HEE and The University to allocate places on the training.
