Inclusive Research Approaches for People With Dementia

Funding:

Funded PhD

Duration:

3 years (full time) 6 years (part time)

Application deadline:

28 June 2024

About this project

There is a need within dementia research for inclusive research approaches for underrepresented groups of people with dementia, focusing on developing innovations in methodology and methods and community and co-production approaches.

The aim of this PhD is therefore to innovate inclusive research methods to widen involvement, engagement and participation for people with dementia and to reduce inequalities of opportunity for research inclusion across the dementia trajectory.

The work will focus on equitable participation in applied and clinical research studies for people with dementia across the disease trajectory, their family carers who face increasing demands, and underrepresented groups. This study will foster innovative methodologies to facilitate inclusive and sensitive research approaches, working with lived experts to consider what works, when and how. The successful candidate will use creative approaches to support and increase involvement and participation in research.

The PhD is part of an ESRC funded Dementia Network called EMPOWER which brings together lived experts, researchers, clinicians, charities and community groups to try to address inequalities in dementia care to empower a meaningful life for all. The student will join the network and their work will inform a toolkit on inclusive research approaches.
