This specialist programme is distinctive in its focus on finance and investment, with content including portfolio and fund management, treasury functions and financial investment and with an emphasis on financial instruments and markets. You will gain technical capabilities in particular quantitative skills, increasingly important for a career in finance or investment. This distinctive programme imparts an appreciation and understanding of the risks presented by the financial and investment decision making of firms, as well as an understanding of the important role that financial markets and investors play in corporate governance. It includes a discussion of socially responsible investment. What you'll study You will develop key professional and research skills, as well as an understanding of ethical business practice. You will also undertake a final research project, which you can choose from a dissertation or a business-based project. Core modules Financial Markets This module aims to give you an understanding of the principles of modern financial markets and instruments. You'll learn to apply these concepts by following and interpreting current affairs in the financial markets. Investment and Financial Theory This module provides a critical understanding of core concepts in investment and finance. You'll explore consumption, investment choice under uncertainty, mean variance portfolio theory, capital asset pricing model, capital structure, derivatives, forwards and futures, and option pricing theory. Quantitative Techniques in Finance and Investments This module gives you the knowledge to understand and apply quantitative aspects of finance and investments disciplines and related theories. You'll use your skills in mathematics, statistics and econometrics to analyse data and make inferences as a basis for 'optimal' financial and investment decision making. International Finance and Investment Gain knowledge and skills relating to the function of foreign exchange markets, international monetary and financial theories, foreign exchange risk management and international investment strategies. One of this module's distinctive features is its emphasis on empirical applications of theories. Portfolio Management This module aims to provide a critical understanding of achieving investment objectives through asset allocation and investment selection on a global scale. You'll consider the background and decision-making process in depth to develop the skills for evaluating and managing an investment portfolio. Optional modules International Banking Public Sector Finance, Taxation and Accounting Real Estate Investment and Finance Gain a systematic and coherent understanding of the processes, vehicles and performance of real estate investment, as well as their optimal financing strategies. You'll consider these elements in the context of the modern investment science of dynamic decision-making under uncertainty. Risk Management and Valuation This module provides you with a thorough understanding of the most modern and effective risk assessment and management tools, models and practices. This programme provides a further specialisation in the subject area and, therefore, requires that you have a good understanding and command of mathematics and statistics (arithmetic, algebra, and terminologies such as standard deviation, expected value, probability, regression and similar). International students If you require a Tier 4 student visa to study or if your first language is not English you will be required to provide acceptable evidence of your English language proficiency level.
