Dear students,
Following the announcement last Thursday, we have heard from many of you who wish to join us in expressing your deepest sympathy and sincere condolences to the Royal Family. Thank you for your messages and we encourage you to continue to share your condolences and thoughts with one another, and also via The Royal Family Book of Condolence.
We know that many people may be experiencing feelings of grief and that events such as this affect everyone differently. One of the things that we are proud of at the University is how our community always comes together to support one another during difficult times. Please do remember that our Support Services are here for you should you need it at this time.
We appreciate this is a significant time in your University experience and over the last couple of days we have spent a great deal of time considering how we may need to adjust our Welcome Week plans as a sign of respect whilst ensuring we continue to provide you with key support and services during this period.
Below we have highlighted what you can expect over the coming week:
Arrivals – Wednesday 14 to Sunday 18 September
We will continue to welcome students to our campus with no changes to the original plans to accommodation and WelcomeFest activities up to and including Sunday 18 September.
A National Moment of Reflection
The UK will come together on 18 September at 8pm to take part in a minute’s silence to mourn the passing of Her Majesty The Queen and reflect on her life and legacy. Wherever you may be at this time, we invite you to join in this national moment of reflection.
Monday 19 September
It has been confirmed that Her Majesty The Queen’s funeral will take place on Monday 19 September and therefore a Bank Holiday has been confirmed.
What services will be available on the Bank Holiday?
Our core services will still be available on the day including:
- The Accommodation Hub will be open from 9.00am – 5.00pm and the reception desks at The Courtyard and Westfield Court will be open with staff available 24 hours a day
- Spar retail outlet – Open 8am – 10pm
- Brynmor Jones Library – Open 24 hours
- Brynmor Jones café – Open 8am – 9.30pm
- Hull Sport Park (Sports Facilities) – 4pm-10pm
- Wetherspoon at Sanctuary – 8am until midnight
As Enrolment takes place online this will continue as planned throughout the week.
Our eInduction modules on myJourney are also packed full of information to help you prepare for the start of the academic year. You’ll also be able to access your Academic Induction Week timetable on myJourney too when it is available.
To ensure the Health and Safety of our university our Security teams will be working as normal.
We will be screening The Queen’s funeral on the screens in the Brynmor Jones Library Cafe and in Wetherspoon at Sanctuary, to enable those on campus to come together to support each other during this historic occasion. In addition to this, the funeral will also be screened on a large screen in Hull city centre as well as tributes being laid at the Queen Victoria statue in Queen Victoria Square.
What has changed?
- Due to the Bank Holiday, collection of student ID cards, Biometric Residence Permit (BRP), and enrolment for international students will not be able to take place on Monday 19 September. However, we have extended the Main Card Collection Event opening times over Arrivals Weekend and the rest of Welcome Week to enable you to undertake these tasks at other times. Remember to book your time slot through the link in your enrolment confirmation email.
- All Academic Induction activity planned for 19 September has been rescheduled either on the 21 September or as part of other Welcome Week activities.
- Hull University Students’ Union has adjusted a number of its WelcomeFest activities. The updated events and activities can be found on the Hull University Students’ Union WelcomeFest webpage.
- The unveiling of our new University Mural, designed by two of our students, has moved to 3pm on 20 September. Make sure you join us to enjoy our student band, a slice of pizza and a glimpse of this impressive artwork.
- We anticipate that some rail services will be particularly busy around this time so please make sure you check your journey ahead of time.
We are looking forward to welcoming you to campus over the coming week and as always, we are here to support you at this incredibly important time. If you have any questions at all about the information above please raise an enquiry via the myHull Portal.
Thank you,
Professor Dave Petley
Vice-Chancellor
