Our graduates leading the way in the regional arts scene

Arts in Hull have gone from strength to strength, and our graduates are shining lights in this important scene.

Carys Tavener

When making her final decision on where to study, the driving factor for Drama graduate Carys Tavener was the City of Culture 2017 status. Throughout her course, Carys did everything she could to prepare herself for the opportunities that lay ahead and, on graduation, was rewarded with a Junior Production Manager role for the year.

Carys has been responsible for the hugely successful ‘Back to Yours’ mini-festivals, taking performance and cultural activities out into the local community. Her role has also been extended into the Culture Company legacy – and festivals have taken place as recently as February 2018.

Roaring Girls

The force of nature that is the Roaring Girls formed at the University in 2014. Then MA students, graduates Rachael Abbey and Lizi Perry, wanted to create theatre that shares their own personal narratives, stories to which real people can relate and respond.

Their work ‘Weathered Estates’ was featured as part of the Hull 2017 programme of work and was performed at both the University’s Donald Roy Theatre and in the Ferens Art Gallery. The company worked with current students and Dr Amy Skinner to create a contemporary retelling of Women of Troy, written by Zodwa Nyoni. It was a roaring success, and well received by audiences and critics alike.

Other regional theatre groups springing from the University’s Gulbenkian Theatre include the successful Hull-based Middle Child, which joins the Arts Council’s National Portfolio in April 2018. Read an interview with graduate Mungo Beaumont in a previous edition of the Venn Alumni magazine

The Pub Corner Poets was co-founded by Hull graduate Josh Overton, and includes other Drama alum amongst its members. The company's most recent show, Sad Little Man, has toured the country to rave reviews - including performances at the NSDF 2017 and a week stint at the Edinburgh Fringe festival.
