Leading the way in the world of culture

From leading playwrights to Grammy winners, our graduates are pushing the boundaries of arts and culture.

James Graham

James Graham (Drama, 2003) is the UK’s foremost political playwright and a film and TV writer. Millions have viewed his work on the West End and Broadway, and on both the big and small screens.

His wide-ranging career has included the film X+Y, Channel 4 drama Coalition, and the book of Finding Neverland, originally a musical by Gary Barlow. Yet his first love is still theatre – most recently penning The Culture – A Face in Two Acts, which takes a light-hearted, fond view of the City of Culture year in Hull.

We recently welcomed James to the University to give a scriptwriting masterclass to students and to talk about his career as one of the most significant writers currently working in British theatre.

Martin Lowe

We were delighted to that award-winning composer Martin Lowe was able to accept an honorary doctorate from the University in 2016. His brilliant career as a composer, orchestrator and music supervisor. His many accolades include a Tony award, a Grammy and an Emmy. Martin's work has been seen on the big screen, as musical director, and on many Broadway and West End shows, including Harry Potter and the Cursed Child.

Martin's relationship with the University has remained strong, and he was the special guest at the Middleton Hall Grand opening in September 2016. On the day, a number of music students were treated to a masterclass in composition, as well as listening to his speech about how his degree from Hull inspired his career.
