COVID-19: Guide to mass testing for students and staff

The Mass Testing Centre on campus continues to offer COVID-19 tests.

The free, self-administered, 10-minute tests (which includes registration) are available for any student or member of staff currently on campus.

Some people may not realise they have COVID-19, as they do not display any symptoms. For this reason, the Government is continuing mass testing at universities.

The testing centre is specifically aimed at students and staff who do not have COVID-19 symptoms. If you are showing symptoms of COVID-19 please click here for further information regarding self isolation and booking a test.

Update:

For those staff and students currently on campus, we have made the process to book your free COVID-19 test as simple and quick as possible – and you can book your test just 20 minutes in advance. · The testing centre is now open Monday to Friday from 8am to 12pm, with the last test slot at 11.40am.

We are asking that any returning students get tested as soon as possible when they return to campus, before accessing University facilities. This will help to reduce any transmission on campus.

  1. Twice-weekly testing is now available for those without symptoms.
  2. It is voluntary for all students and staff.
  3. You are advised to take two tests, three days apart from each other. Please book your first test, then wait until you have your test result, before booking your second test.
  4. The tests are recommended for all those returning to university and are available whether you live on campus or in private accommodation. Tests are quick and easy.
  5. The test takes around 10 minutes, including registration, with test slots available to book online. You can book on the day, just 20 minutes in advance.
  6. The testing centre is now based in the Dennison Centre, which is opposite the main University entrance on Cottingham Road. 
  7. You will take the test yourself, and results will be available within the hour.
  8. Please register for an NHS Test and Trace account in advance. Once an account has been created, a simple login will mean you won’t have to re-enter your details the next time you get tested. You will register on entering the test centre using your own mobile phone. Your results will then be communicated directly to you on your phone.
  9. Test results are confidential – they are not shared with the University or any other party. The University will not have access to test results but would ask that you please follow current guidance, should you test positive, by completing the University COVID-19 self-reporting tool via the support portal. Details of support available to help make the process for self-isolation as comfortable as possible can be found here.
  10. Government guidance recommends students are tested immediately upon their return and then again 3 days later. Following a negative result for the first tests, students should limit their social contact and interaction with other students until they receive a second negative LFD test. While waiting for test results (typically one hour), students should not interact with other students to avoid virus transmission.
Why is the University running this testing?

As a University, we are keen to do everything we can to support the local, national and international effort to reduce the spread of COVID-19. Working in partnership with the Department for Health and Social Care, and Public Health England, our focus is now on supporting our students and staff in returning after the winter break.

Giving you the opportunity to take a test on your arrival this term will provide you with assurance regarding the risk of COVID transmission.

Who will have access to testing?

All staff and current students at the University of Hull will have access to testing, including students from the UK, international students, undergraduate students, postgraduate students and those on other kinds of courses.

How can I take part?

The tests are bookable online and are self-administered in the testing centre. Guidance will be provided on arrival about how to perform the tests. They are safe, free and results are available within the hour.

The result of the test is received on your phone. A test visit will last approximately 10 minutes (including registration).

The University will not have access to test results but would ask that you please follow current guidance, should you test positive, by completing the University COVID-19 self-reporting tool via the support portal.

Should I book both tests at once?

Please book your first test, then wait until you have your test result, before booking your next test.

What if I have had one or both of my vaccines?

If a member of the community has been vaccinated, irrelevant of receiving one or two vaccines, they should continue to attend twice weekly testing at the onsite test centre.

Can I do COVID-19 testing during Ramadan?

The Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC) have provided the following guidance about testing during Ramadan. After DHSC consultations with the British Islamic Medical Association, the Association has advised "our position is that PCR and LFD tests do not invalidate the fast, which is the opinion of the vast majority of Islamic scholars.”

Can I return to campus if I don’t get a test?

Yes, although we recommend you are tested to limit the transmission of COVID-19.

Where do I go for my test once I have booked one?

The testing centre is now based in the Dennison Centre, which is opposite the main University entrance on Cottingham Road. Once you have booked a slot for your test, we would ask that you please go to the front of the building at the allotted time, where you will be guided to the appropriate entrance point.

Please note: these tests do not take place in the COVID-19 Local Testing Station, which is open to the whole community at the Inglemire Lane Car Park.

How is the test taken? What happens when I go for a test?

You will receive guidance on how to take the Lateral Flow antigen test, supported by trained on-site staff. The self-administered test involves applying a swab to the throat and nose. The sample is processed on-site, and the results are available within the hour. All students and staff attending for tests will be advised to wear face coverings (unless exempt) and observe 2m physical distancing. Help will be on hand at every stage of the process.

What happens after I get my first test results? What is the process?

Following a negative result for the first test, you should limit social contact and interaction with others until you receive a second negative test. While waiting for test results (typically one hour), you should not interact with others to avoid virus transmission. After receiving two negative test results, you are able to access university facilities as usual, following social distancing guidelines and COVID-19 precautions

If you have tested positive as part of the mass testing programme, you need to:

  • Register your result on the University COVID-19 self-reporting tool
  • Self-isolate for 10 days. (The 10 days includes the day of your test/result). If there is a subsequent onset of symptoms, you should isolate for 10 days from the onset of symptoms. Those you live with will need to self-isolate.
  • Book/take a PCR test at a government testing centre. There is one located on campus – on the other side of Inglemire Lane to the University’s mass testing centre. Go to the Gov.uk website to book a follow-up PCR test on the same day or as soon as possible. Please visit the test centre where possible, as it is faster than requesting a Home test. (Please note this guidance relating to the need for a confirmatory PCR test was re-instated by government on 29/3/2021).

What happens if the test returns a negative result?

While waiting for test results (typically one hour), you should not interact with others to avoid virus transmission. After receiving two negative test results, you are able to access university facilities as usual, following social distancing guidelines and COVID-19 precautions.

However, if a member of your household tests positive, please follow Government and University guidance.

What happens if the test returns a positive result?

If you have tested positive as part of the mass testing programme, you need to:

  • Register your result on the University COVID-19 self-reporting tool
  • Self-isolate for 10 days. (The 10 days includes the day of your test/result). If there is a subsequent onset of symptoms, you should isolate for 10 days from the onset of symptoms. Those you live with will need to self-isolate.

Someone I live with has had a positive result from this programme – what does this mean for me?

If your flatmate tests positive, please follow current guidance on self-isolating. Details of support available to help make the process for self-isolation as comfortable as possible can be found here.

I am a close contact of someone who has tested positive, but I don’t show any symptoms and I have had two negative test results – what does this mean for me?

Anyone who is a close contact of a positive, but does not show any symptoms and has two negative test results, is required to follow current guidance on self-isolating. You do need not do the twice-weekly Lateral Flow testing during self-isolation period.

Do I need to get tested if I have already had COVID-19?

If someone has recently (within 90 days) tested positive for COVID-19, they are likely to have developed some immunity, and therefore a repeat Lateral Flow test is unlikely to be necessary within this period.

If having recently tested positive for COVID-19, you choose to have an Lateral Flow test as part of this programme, please ensure the Lateral Flow test is not taken whilst still within the period of isolation following the last confirmed test.

What happens if I don’t receive my test result?

The government guidance is that you should receive your result within the hour. If you do not receive it within 24 hours, please retest.

Please email ats@hull.ac.uk to let us know and so that we can alert Public Health England to the numbers of students not receiving their results.

What do I need to bring when I have my test?

Please bring a face covering (unless exempt), your mobile phone and ID.

I don’t have a mobile phone. What do I do?

Although most people will register using their mobile phone, a laptop is available in the testing centre to complete the registration process. Please allow a little extra time to do this. Testing centre staff will be on hand to help anyone who needs assistance with registration.

The laptop is sanitised before and after use and we ask people to sanitise their hands before they begin registering.

If you don’t have a mobile phone, you can receive your results by email.

What happens if I’m exempt from wearing a mask or face covering?

Appropriate face coverings need to be worn throughout the testing process whilst in the testing facility apart from when guided by a testing operative to remove it when your sample is taken. Should you have age, health or disability reason for not wearing a face covering, please wear a visor to the site and alert the queue co-ordinator about your situation as soon as you arrive so they can take additional precautions.

Please note the visor alone is not considered face covering as they do not provide adequate protection alone.

Is the Testing Centre accessible for people with disabilities?

Our Testing Centre is based in the Dennison Centre, which is opposite the main University entrance on Cottingham Road, which is fully wheelchair accessible at the front entrance, where you can also exit from.

Please note that the people staffing our testing centre are trained to offer guidance on how to self-administer your test, but are not qualified to perform swabs on other people.

If you won’t be able to do the swabs yourself, the Government’s Department of Health and Social Care recommends that you bring someone with you (such as a family member) who can do the test for you. If this isn’t possible, it would be best to order a home testing kit instead or to ask your GP for advice.

When you book your test appointment online, the form will ask about your accessibility needs so we can try our best to meet them or to give you alternative advice as appropriate to your specific circumstances.

Is this test compulsory?

Participation is entirely voluntary, on an “opt in” basis, and you may withdraw from the testing activity at any point.

Government guidance recommends students and staff accessing campus facilities / involved in campus activities take part in routine, twice-weekly testing.

Testing will help to break the line of transmission especially when you are infected but are not aware of it.

Data Protection

A copy of your result will be sent to your GP. If you have tested positive, a notification will be sent to Public Health England (in England), Public Health Wales (in Wales), Health Protection Scotland (in Scotland), or the Public Health Agency (in Northern Ireland).
