You will all appreciate that we have to balance numerous factors in deciding what to do about the assessment period in May/June, and we recognise that it is probably impossible to fully satisfy everyone in this emergency situation.
We are acutely aware that in attempting to undertake assessments remotely, there are a wide range of issues for some of you to overcome including Wi-Fi, study space at home and access to reliable devices. We are also aware that some of our students are parents or carers. Added to this, we will all face pressures from whatever other challenges the Covid-19 virus and the global response to it generates over the coming weeks. In working through the various options available this has been our overriding consideration. We are also aware that some of you want to make yourselves available for work or volunteering as soon as possible to help address the crisis.
Our aim is to provide you with as much information and reassurance as possible about our approach to assessment for Trimester 2 and 3.Please remember, however, that staff have a lot of work to do in order to provide you with accurate answers about how this plan affects you as an individual. As you will appreciate, every programme is different, and students on the same programme may be taking different optional modules, meaning you may have a different set of assessments to your peers. Please be assured the decisions we are taking are intended to be as fair to you all as they can be.
- All assessment for Trimester 2 and 3 will be online. Where at least some learning outcomes have already been assessed in your module, we have advised your teaching staff that outstanding assessments should be modified to assess only the module learning outcomes that have not yet been assessed. You may therefore be set an alternative assessment, for example questions on a written examination paper modified into a piece of coursework and submitted through Canvas. In such cases it may be the same questions that you would have been set in your exam, but with some modifications. We will try to keep any modifications to a minimum. You will find specific details about individual assessments on your module Canvas site.
- Where possible you should submit your remaining assessments by the deadlines on your module Canvas sites. Where it has been necessary, new or revised assessment deadlines have been published on your module Canvas sites.
- If you are unable to submit by the deadline on Canvas, there will be an automatic extension of 14 calendar days. You can submit at any time during this 14-day period and late penalties will not be applied. You do not need to apply for this extension, it will be applied automatically.
- If you are still unable to submit by the extended deadline, you will automatically be granted ‘mitigating circumstances’ which means that you will be contacted and given another opportunity to be assessed at a later date without a late submission penalty. You do not need to apply for mitigating circumstances, they will be applied automatically.
Please do try to meet published deadlines if you are well and able to do so. This will help you to manage your workload and help your tutors to manage theirs.
What does this mean?
For assessments with submission dates from Monday 16 March 2020 until the end of Trimester 3, the following processes apply:
- If you have been able to submit by the original deadline on Canvas, the last version that you submit before the original deadline will be marked. This is the same as the normal process.
- If you have been unable to submit by the original deadline on Canvas, you will be given an automatic extension of 14 calendar days. If you are submitting during this extended timeframe, you must make sure that this submission is the final version as any later submissions will not be marked. In light of this, please give yourself time to double-check before submitting any assessments. If you have any specific questions about a piece of assessment, please contact your Module Leader, Academic Support Tutor (AST) or Programme Director.
- If your assessment deadline was before 16 March 2020 and you have not submitted, or you believe your submission has been adversely affected by the situation, you will need to apply for mitigating circumstances. You can find the mitigating circumstances form via the MyHull Portal, where you can also submit using the ‘talk to us’ option.
- If you are an undergraduate and your marks for this year contribute to your final degree classification (for example, all finalists and second years), the ‘No Detriment’ approach means that we will calculate your degree classification with and without the marks from modules affected by Covid-19, and we will award the higher classification in each case.
- If you are a PGT student we will calculate your classification with and without the marks from modules in T2 affected by Covid-19, and we will award the higher classification in each case. Because your dissertation/project is a key component of your degree, we cannot exclude these Masters level marks from the calculation.
- Importantly, you will still need to pass the year, which means you must complete any remaining assessments for your modules and achieve an overall pass mark. If this is the case, completing your current assessments can only help raise your mark, it will not lower it.
- For foundation year and first year students, we will reflect the impact of Covid-19 at module level exam boards by reviewing your marks to ensure there has been no detriment.
- For those of you on professionally accredited programmes, such as medicine, nursing, teaching or social work, we are following specific advice from your regulatory bodies. Each professional body is developing its own response to Covid-19. Programme teams will continue to update you on any profession-specific guidance and developments that relate to your course.
- In the case of some of our students on healthcare professional programmes, you will also be aware that work is underway to explore ways in which you can support frontline health services during this emergency. Again, programme teams will be updating you regularly on these developments.
In response to the Coronavirus (Covid-19) outbreak, we have taken the decision to postpone the summer graduation ceremonies until later in 2020 or early 2021.
However, it is important to note the difference between graduating (that is being awarded your degree) and the graduation ceremony (the opportunity to celebrate your graduation). Please read the separate information on Rescheduling graduation ceremonies.
Our aim is to ensure you can progress in your studies and for final year students to graduate this academic year.
- You will graduate when the Board of Examiners confirms your award, i.e. that the Board is satisfied that you have met the Programme Learning Outcomes through the modules you have completed, and your graduation ceremony will be held at a later date.
- Programme Learning Outcomes are very broad outcomes that are usually met in different ways across multiple modules.
- You can use the automatic extension to help you manage assessment deadlines If you are successful in demonstrating the learning outcomes (that is, if you have passed the required number of modules), we will be able to grant your award at the Board of Examiners already scheduled for June. This means that if you have an offer of employment starting in the summer or autumn, our processes mean you will graduate in time.
- If you cannot meet the deadline, even with the extension, you will automatically be granted mitigating circumstances. Your Faculty Hub will be in touch with you to explain your options. If you need a further extension, we will be able to grant that because we have delayed the graduation ceremony.
- We will set up a series of monthly Boards of Examiners, so that when your work is submitted, we can mark it and check the Programme Learning Outcomes have been met, and the Board of Examiners can grant your award. There will be a final deadline by which we need to have made the decision whether you can graduate in time for the graduation ceremony. It is likely to be in the Autumn of 2020 and we will let you know that date soon.
- Given the exceptional circumstances in which you are completing your studies, we are taking a ‘No Detriment’ approach to calculating your degree classification. This approach means that we will calculate your degree classification with an without the marks from modules affected by Covid-19, and we will award the higher classification in each case. Importantly, you will still need to pass the year, which means you must complete any remaining assessments for your modules and achieve an overall pass mark. If this is the case, completing your current assessments can only help raise your mark, it will not lower it.
We want to ensure that – where possible – you can focus on your dissertation/project with online support from your tutors. We are already modifying dissertations/projects in a number of ways to take account of this emergency situation.

Many of you are due to graduate in our winter ceremonies in January 2021. We are still working to that deadline.
Postgraduate Training Scheme
As a taught Masters course, the PGTS will follow the guidelines set out by the University regarding automatic extensions, mitigating circumstances and graduation. Trimester 2 and 3 modules will be moving any final assessments online, if they were not already set up like this. The May School has already been adapted for online delivery and assessment. The Canvas sites will go live in April.
Postgraduate Researchers looking to submit their thesis ready for examination in the next few months still need to have 60 PGTS credits accounted for before they can hand in their thesis. The Boards of Examiners for the PGTS will continue on a monthly basis to make sure PGTS credits are accounted for as soon as possible.
Possible extensions to, and intercalations from, research degrees will be handled as set out in the PGR guidance that has already been issued here.
For those non-finalist students who are returning to study in Trimester 3 (25 May 2020 – 17 August 2020), we are currently planning to continue with online tuition and support in Trimester 3 because, like everyone else, we cannot be certain when the current restrictions will be lifted. We will keep you informed as things progress.
You should continue to complete any outstanding assessments as directed by your Module Leader, making use of the 14 calendar day automatic extension and automatic mitigating circumstances if you need them. We are proceeding for now on the assumption that next academic year will start as normal in September and our focus is on supporting you to progress to the next year/level of your studies with us.
In order to progress to the next year/level of study, we are asking you to continue to engage with ongoing tuition and outstanding assessments. These act as an important bridge from one level to the next, so that you are fully ready to progress.
Following the email sent to students on 31 March, to clarify, this approach applies to all students from Foundation level to PGT. This approach means we can ensure no student is adversely by the Covid-19 situation.
For foundation year and first year students, we will reflect the impact of Covid-19 at module exam boards by reviewing your marks to ensure there has been no detriment.
If your marks for this year/level contribute to your final degree classification (for example, second year/level 5 undergraduates), the ‘No Detriment’ approach means that we will calculate your ultimate degree classification with and without the marks from assessments affected by Covid-19, and we will award the higher classification.
