As part of the MSc in Flood Risk Management programme, students recently engaged in a two-part initiative bringing Hull’s Community Ambassadors into the classroom. Organised in collaboration with Hull City Council and the "Living with Water" partnership, this unique session brought together students and local Community Ambassadors to bridge classroom theory with real-world experiences.
In small group discussions, students heard powerful first-hand accounts from Community Ambassadors who shared their personal experiences of flooding, as well as the resilience strategies they are adopting in anticipation of future events. Students, in turn, drew on their course knowledge to discuss flood risk mitigation, reflecting on ways they could operationalise academic knowledge to help communities reduce flood impacts. This is the second year of this initiative and it was coordinated by Dr Steven Forrest (EEI) and Lauren Murtagh (Hull City Council).
By combining academic learning with real-world challenges, this collaboration highlights the potential of community partnerships in equipping students with the knowledge and tools needed to support sustainable, flood-resilient communities.
