Modern Languages and Cultures

You don't just become fluent in another language at Hull - you immerse yourself in the culture of the people who speak it. Languages is part of the School of Histories, Languages and Cultures, which sits in the Faculty of Arts, Cultures and Education.


We offer Chinese, French, German, Italian, Spanish, English Language, Linguistics and Cultures with a broad choice of complementary subjects.

Undergraduate students spend an unforgettable year abroad, studying at a partner university or working in a school or in industry, in a country where your chosen language (or languages) is spoken.

Foundation year

Gives you the skills and knowledge for entry on to a degree if you don’t quite meet the academic entry requirements.

Study abroad

We have partnerships with universities across the globe. Depending on your course, you can study for one trimester, or a full year, in another country.

Industrial placement

Work in industry as part of your degree. Depending on your course, you can spend part of your degree on placement. See your course page for specific details.

Integrated Masters

Some courses combine undergraduate and postgraduate study. The integrated Masters year is an extra year after your standard degree.


Postgraduate Taught

  • MA in TESOL

    Ideal for language graduates, or those with teaching experience to gain in-depth knowledge of English and how to teach it to speakers of other languages.

  • MA in TESOL with Translation Studies

    This course focuses on English and how to teach it speakers of other languages, but also looks at translation theories and practice.

  • MA in Translation Studies

    Learn the skills to deliver success in areas such as international business, trade, and legal affairs, to name just a few.

  • MA in Translation Studies with TESOL

    This degree focuses on translation theories and practice, but is also suitable if you have an interest in English and how to teach it.

Become fluent in another language and immerse yourself in the history, literature, art, films, music, media and politics of the culture.

We offer Chinese, French, German, Italian and Spanish, with the option to study one, two or three of the languages, and the chance to take an intensive course if you want to start a language from scratch.


While studying for a degree, you can also choose to gain a qualification in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL), opening doors for worldwide travel and working.


Our dedicated team of Language Learning Advisors provide advice and one-to-one support. They can help you get the most out of our excellent facilities and learning spaces, and offer language-specific advice and resources.

At Hull, we run a Tandem Learning Programme which pairs you with a native speaker to mutually improve your language skills.



You'll have access to our dedicated Shoosmith Language Learning Centre, which is open 24/7 in the library at the heart of the campus. The team of Language Learning Advisors will be able to help you get the most out of the excellent facilities available.



As a languages graduate, you’ll have theskills to make a difference to any organisation. This could be directly around your ability as a linguist or working in any sector in which communication plays an important part. This includes business, politics and journalism to name just a few.
